Finally snagged a GF4 Ti 4600 for a cheap price. It looks really clean too. I've already got a working 64 MB Ti 4200, but I couldn't resist. 🤣 (sellers photo)

I haven't had any issues with sellers blocking me, but I have had the problem of winning an auction for a really cheap price and having the seller never ship the item. 😢

The black HK695's go perfect with this machine. Good choice. Hopefully the single 1GB stick works. Max is 2x 512MB per the manual.

The most recent BIOS update for the RC440BX board is from 2000: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/914 … -?product=50524 There's a chance you could update the BIOS to recognize the PIII before returning it.

The Dimension 4100 should have an AGP 4x / 2.0 slot since it has the i815E chipset. The power supply could definitely be a concern though. An adapter + new upgraded ATX power supply would do the trick. A Pentium III board is going to power the CPU via the 5V rail rather than 12V like a modern system …

A really clean Radeon 9700 Pro arrived today. Unfortunately, I just threw it on my D850GB test bench and it's exhibiting crazy artifacts. 😵 It was advertised as working and was shipped without an anti-static bag. So I guess this one will be going back. 😢

Theoretically it should work, assuming the BIOS doesn't freak out. The Pentium Pro has a P6 core and uses the same AGTL bus protocol as the Pentium II and III. The lack of MMX/SSE and low clock speed (max 200) would probably bottleneck most AGP graphics cards besides the really slow first generation …

Agreed. Intel even did a much smaller package with the mobile Pentium II in MCA package which launched in early 1998. Added an edit above to expand a bit more. What resolution are you trying to play at? Lower resolutions are typically CPU-limited, so if you are playing at 640x480, you could probably go up to 800x600 or 1024x768 with that GF3 and maintain the same FPS. The CPU is likely a limiting factor here. If …

A Geforce 2 or GeForce 256 wouldn't be an upgrade from the GF3 Ti 200. A 64 MB Geforce 4 Ti 4200 would be a nice upgrade, but it may be your CPU that's causing the bottleneck. I'd be surprised if the GF3 driver overhead was too much for a PIII 933 compared to a GF2. Based on this 2001 Anandtech …
