A 2.8/533 Northwood would be pretty cheap to acquire and equally or more performant than Prescott. If you’re in the US, that big auction site has them (SL6PF) for $7 with shipping.

It’s most likely from a Dell XPS R400 or other Dell of that period. Here’s a photo of that exact heatsink in the original Dell case. They just have an 80 mm case fan nearby without a duct. I’ve had good luck with SD to IDE adapters and high quality U3 rated SD cards like Sandisk Extreme for Windows 98 builds. I only use CF cards for 486 or older systems though.

Holy bump from 4 years ago Batman! That is an interesting CPU though. There’s a whole Tillamook thread about getting L2 cache working on desktop boards, but this is a nice alternative for a fast Pentium MMX build.

Only the non-MMX PPGA Pentiums have the speed marking on the top. MMX models only have it on the bottom.

But Slot A CPUs are cooler! The first AMD CPUs to really surpass Intel. For $5 you can just clean it up and run it as is. Try some games first. Then think about an upgrade if they run too slowly on the 500 MHz Athlon. You can get slot A CPUs cheap if you’re a little patient.

That’s the best way to find rare and special stuff! Anyone can pay top dollar for a properly listed rare item, but scores like yours are like finding a diamond in the rough. I collect x86 engineering samples and finding them in a scrap lot or for a really cheap price is really exciting.
