Re: OPL2LPT

Is that PS/2 MCA based? I do not know. I do know that the Docking Station (more like very bulky "Service Station") connects via the ISA bus in the back providing support for up to two full length ISA cards. Ah I doubt it then if it has ISA. Thanks IBM for the PS/2 range that brought us things like …

Re: OPL2LPT

I have bought a OPL2LPT for my IBM PC since the MCA sound cards are difficult to obtain. However it does not work. I have tried on newer systems like a later 386 with typical MultiIO card and it works fine on the LPT. Something must be different on the IBM machine, as I get only random sounds there …

Re: OPL2LPT

If you haven't already done it, I very highly recommend downloading the OPL2 version of Adlib Tracker II from http://www.adlibtracker.net/downloads.php and playing some of the sample modules. I've just sat listening to some for the last hour and they sound amazing on this little sound card!

Re: OPL2LPT

Thought I'd start a YouTube channel and a quick 5 minute video of this sound card is my first attempt at a video 😀 https://youtu.be/aNhu03_dgfg

Re: OPL2LPT

Just tried this new one on my 486 DX/2 50 Thinkpad 360CSE (PC DOS 6.3 - it says I have EMM386 you've never seen before - 4.48) and I have mixed results: Commander Keen K6DEMO is perfect (the same as v0.4) IPLAY/GLX212 crash trying to play MOD files (work fine just a bit quiet with v0.4) Pinball …

Re: OPL2LPT

Just got a "new" 23 year old ThinkPad - a 360CSE (486 DX/2 50Mhz, 8MB, 344MB HDD) which doesn't have a sound card and this OPL2LPT works perfectly on it :) It has a faulty keyboard though where the P and ; keys don't work so had to make up a batch file copy and pasting the letters to run the …

Re: OPL2LPT

Just run it on the PS/2 P70 and I get: Parallel port(s) found: 1 LPT1 3BCH standard (output-only) I'm a little surprised that the first parallel port is configured to use 3BCH; I thought that was only on even older machines. I looked at the source code to the TSR early on, but don't remember if it …

Re: OPL2LPT

I wonder if it's some DOS config that's in effect here. If I boot up with no config.sys/autoexec.bat (DOS 6.2 on the HDD or a Windows 98 boot disk) I get no sound at all. The LPTDTECT shows the same. If I boot with config.sys/autoexec.bat (himem, emm386 blah blah) then I get the screeching noise. …

Re: OPL2LPT

Just run it on the PS/2 P70 and I get: Parallel port(s) found: 1 LPT1 3BCH standard (output-only) My old Thinkpad says bi-directional

Re: OPL2LPT

Discovered what that button does - resets it! Had a hanging note just now when quitting Alone In The Dark so pressed the button and it stopped 😀

Re: OPL2LPT

Same one missing as me! Was it just missing from the kit? I got ten of them for under £2 on ebay which have turned up today - swapped out the alternate one I put in and it's a much cleaner sound now. Still doesn't work on the PS/2 though.

Re: OPL2LPT

Nope afraid no difference. Just get long drawn out loud noises still. On the plus side Galaxy Music Player v2.12 works fine for MOD files (on the Thinkpad, not the PS/2)

Re: OPL2LPT

I'll go give that a go. I've successfully used a Zip drive and a home-made Disney Sound Source/Covox speech thing (the ladder resistor one) on the same port and it worked OK.

Re: OPL2LPT

Hi pdw, I get on a normal boot with EMM386 etc etc running: ps2 iospeed.PNG And this gives me screeching distorted sound using opl2test.exe. On a completely clean F5 boot I get: io speed2.PNG And this just gives silence. Don't you just love the orange gas plasma screen? :D I thought it might be …

Re: OPL2LPT

I did wonder if it's something to do with the capabilities of the parallel port (ECP vs EPP etc.) but I can't change any settings even with the reference diskette (apart from LPT number 1, 2, 3 or disabled). Anyone got a 486 PC/motherboard I can have for cheap :) Just looked up parallel ports on …

Re: OPL2LPT

I don't have any other 386, 486 or Pentium computers around to try it on, and eBay is so expensive! If there's any testing I can do on the PS/2 to help, let me know!

Re: OPL2LPT

Thanks for the reply! It seems to be working fine, but I will still replace the opamp. Been doing more testing and Intertia Player (iplay 1.22) works fine - I can play MOD files through it! Didn't know you could do this with an Adlib. Reality ADlib Tracker works perfectly well too playing samples …
