Okay, thanks for your input and the specs, even though you didn't really answer my initial question 😉 After some research I think I'm better off with a Thinkpad 770, since all models have TFTs and appear to scale 320x2** and 640x480 to near fullscreen.

I have the perfect mousepad for a 1998-build. I "liberated" it from my school's computer pool in 1998 and have used it eversince. It's the plainest red plasticky mousepad imaginable.

The only thing that bugs me is that despite having 486DX4@100MHz processor, there isn't any radiator on it. That's fine. Those later embedded versions of the DX4 don't require any cooling.
