YMF721 is for MIDI music, and when the DAC inside YMF71x is used for the MIDI chip, OPL3 internal to YMF71x has no more output and one in YMF721 takes its place instead. It is possible to have both OPL3 as on my YMF71x card but it requires external DAC chip for YMF704/721.

Only benefit I would get from 4 layers at this point is a proper ground plane and a bit better power delivery, but the way signals are done, is already basically optimal, with minimal via use etc. 4 layers is starting to get pretty cheap indeed, perhaps one day I'll justify the jump in my head lol …

There are two holes to put plastic spacers into like you sometimes see used on AT cases+mobos, to support the board at the mobo end. You can screw those copper bits into those holes if you need further connectivity, they align with existing ATX screwholes too.

In general the capacitors are there for a reason and when one is bad (or even more of them) you're are expected to have issues. Often parts of same type fail simultaneously, and not always with visible signs.

Nowdays there's enough computing power to do realtime physical modelling and potential to get very close to live playback is certainly within reach. I know Yamaha has made some products in past that were very convincing and I'm sure there are many softsynths out there that try also.
