The 80ns memories should work but you might experience some minor graphical corruption (wrong pixels and such) occasionally, especially in elevated temperatures.

Ok, this is good news, I'm happy things finally work ~ I will have to slow down the timings of EEPROM writes then, or add a new parameter to kick in slower timings in case of similar sort of troubles.

Did SETYMF find the card prior to writing the EEPROM or did you always need /FORCEPNP option ? Disabling caches is certainly worth to try. The EEPROM chips are somewhat timing sensitive and there is no sort of ready/busy monitoring facility so I simply used a long enough delay that seemed to work …

The card will still use two IRQs, and the subdevices on it need 3 if taken separately as WSS/SB/MPU leading to conflict within the subparts when not using the Yamaha's driver which uses single IRQ for all 3. DMA is also similarly affected, SB uses one and WSS wants 2, and 1 of them is always shared …

I'm pretty sure some video BIOSes want Pentium or newer instructions, but it isn't something I have ever tried to verify.

That chip should work fine. You must line up pin1 of socket and chip, if not you'll burn out the chip and probably damage the card also. Chip fits both ways so care is necessary.

Does the geometry also change with this ? I.e image expands with the brightness decrease ? There's a good chance it is caused by HV drop, and it can inidcate weak flyback transformer as I doubt it was like it when new... Replacing few capacitors on the main power rails can also help a little bit …

The part that goes in the pads of the chip has a few that look like they got severed or perhaps (almost) touching the neighboring pads with the displaced solder.

That does look like some tracks might be severed or almost so. It certainly is fixable with a bit of effort. Scape off some more of the soldermask and with luck solder can bridge the abrasion over and you won't need to add wire patches over the damaged parts. You'll definitely want to resolder some …

There are three versions of the CT1971 (EMU8000) chip : one without ICxxx marking, IC405A and IC405B. The IC405A version gets very hot (when made by manufacturer named TSMC) while B versions I know of do not. I didn't know there was that big of a price difference, but I haven't actually looked at non-surface mounted stuff expect for high power handling reasons and not for anything needing precision performance 🤣. (I get majority of my stuff from Mouser too, DDP is great !)

You could save substantial space by usng 1/8W or even 1/16W resistors, they will be a lot smaller while not being any more difficult to solder compared to the bigger ones you use right now. I like the idea of being able to plug straight into the LPT header ~
