Does the laptop have vga output? Might help determine if it’s a lcd issue or gpu issue.

Disclaimer: I have no answers your post just got me curious. What hardware / OS is this emulator running on could that support nanosecond timing with any sort of accuracy?

PCI SATA controller seems overkill. I would definitely go with the pata ssd, although keep in mind most of those are 44pin you will likely need a 40pin to 44pin adapter. You can find 16gb 40 pin DOM modules that won’t break the bank but I doubt these are even capable of maxing out the ide spec.

Very cool and unusual build. Ive been eyeing up thin clients with sound blaster compatibility lately, I think the WT941GXL is probably the best available but I haven’t seen them on eBay for < $50.

Yea Diamondville/Pineville Atoms suck, they are next to useless. You could probably make a killer DOS gaming rig if you threw a SB compatible PCI card in there. Or use DOSBox on your Win7 install it would emulate out to something like a Pentium 66 class chip which is still good enough for most DOS …

Is there any chance the file you were trying to load was manipulated externally either by you or the host operating system (windows, linux, whatever your using)? I think DOSBox assumes the files are not changing unless it's changing them, that's the whole reason for the shortcut: CTRL-F4 Update …

My only thoughts on posting a direct image is whatever size drive I use, that’s the size the user would be stuck with unless they are comfortable with gparted or another partioning utility. Am I wrong?
