ME is fine if you are using it the way Bill wanted you to. It was an attempt by MS to move 9x further away from its 16bit roots with the same gui enhancements found in win 2000. It's not just DMA mode and transfer speed, they don't have dram cache so. Dram cache for SSDs would increase performance in PIO mode, Id think even a traditional HDD with a large cache would perform better than a CF card in PIO mode even if the cache isnt used the same way as it is on a SSD. the matrox card isn't total garbage its not that bad. I expect it will work pretty good until you run into a game that doesn't like it.

if you want to play any d3d games Id stay clear of any s3 card, except savage 4. I of course welcome any opinions regarding s3 graphics and 3d performance. I don't know of one, I've looked into it before. I've been forced to use hardware speed controls the ones with the knobs such as zalman etc. Sometimes 5v fans with tolerate 3.3v signals are rotate slower.

1600x1200 is 4:3 its knows as uxga it scales with svga. 16:10 is WUXGA or wide uxga which 1920x1200. can be best be described as either HD with extra pixels above and below bars on top and bottom or SVGA with Bars to the right and left.

16:10 is almost dead. The Philips 252B9 is one of the last ones still available new with both 70Hz support without frameskipping and an explicit 4:3 mode . It is not cheap (prices have gone up since I bought one) and requires an OSSC for the best possible results . 16:10 is far from dead at least …

I wouldn't even consider XP as retro, it gets a pass becasue it has good backwards software and hardware compatibility support for most retro hardware and in most cases its the latest OS you can run on such hardware and have a reasonable experience.
