Re: OPL3LPT : OPL3 FM Synthesis on parallel port

Games where you select SBPro/SB16 for FM music will still go through SB16. But this is precisely my concern. There are many DOS games that don't have an explicit Adlib option for the music, but offer a "Sound Blaster" option which really means calling upon the FM synthesis feature(s) on the Sound …

Re: OPL3LPT : OPL3 FM Synthesis on parallel port

Does anyone have any idea how to kill the Adlib-compatible functionality of an ISA Sound Blaster 16 card? (Specifically one of the many variants that has the CT1978 or equivalent BS.) I'm thinking that pairing an OPL2LPT or OPL3LPT with one of the CT2940s that has CQM would be a much easier way to …

Re: Abuse (Crack dot Com) releases

in Milliways
I'm not sure if the original registered version included music? Shareware v1.05 still does not have it, and it seems to me that it was released after the CD version (not sure). There's also the issue that none of the versions seem to record your settings for sound/music volume. I played this a lot …

Re: HardMPU, anyone?

Could this mean that the MIF-IPC-B has an unmentioned buffering and rate limiting feature? No, the MIF-IPC is a simple interface to connect the MPU-401 to the ISA bus. Any "magic" is happening in the MPU itself. Since this works with my AWE32 and gameport adapter with the system slowed down, that …

Re: HardMPU, anyone?

This is why I mentioned earlier that p1 is the absolute max for gaming with MPUs and MT-32 and even that needs some tricks like L1 cache disabling. 95% of the time it's the game's drivers that crap out due to speed. You might get lucky and have MI work OK with the Roland card but not HardMPU but if …

Re: HardMPU, anyone?

Also, some extra info/thoughts after creating the spreadsheet and recordings: I verified tonight that disabling L1 and L2 cache in my CMOS setup makes both Secret of Monkey Island and Prince of Persia play music correctly to the MT-32 through the HardMPU. Could this mean that the MIF-IPC-B has an …

Re: HardMPU, anyone?

Ok, round 2... I dug out my "Roland DG" MPU401 and MIF-IPC-B card. This creates a bit of a mess on my workbench  Guess what? Monkey Island sounds perfect without slowing the machine down, just like you describe. I'd suspect a problem with HardMPU, but it actually seems to do better than my …

Re: HardMPU, anyone?

For the SC-55mkII, the unit needs to be put into MT-32 mode, or it will sound wrong. This comment inspired me to do a more thorough investigation of the matter. I have very carefully created 25 separate recordings of my MT-32 and SC-55MkII playing various games via different connectors, etc. The …

Re: DOS webserver

Hey. My first post in here. I run a webserver and FTP server in DOS. someone else running servers like that in DOS? Experience? Do you have it online? Mine is running at http://dos.vintagepc.se/index.htm I have an FTP server working on my IBM XT (true 5160 @ 4.77MHz) that I use sometimes to …

Re: HardMPU, anyone?

Noted! I'm not in the habit of power cycling my MT-32 in the middle of a running program; I only did it with Secret of Monkey Island because I was desperate to see any change in behavior. If Secret of Monkey Island truly doesn't use Intelligent Mode, does that mean that the game will play sound …

Re: HardMPU, anyone?

The Secret of Monkey Island uses neither Intelligent Mode nor uploads custom instruments via sysex. You should never reset or power cycle the MT-32 during a game, it will not fix any issues and will wipe whatever instruments or parameters the game has set in the module. You should always reset an …

Re: HardMPU, anyone?

I tried launching Monkey Island again to repeat the experiment with the intro music. But unfortunately my experimenting stopped at that point, because I can no longer get Monkey Island to run. It crashes consistently, no matter how many times I reboot etc. Not sure what I'm doing wrong -- or if my …

Re: HardMPU, anyone?

Here's my recording of the garbled version: http://www.hilbertspace.net/stuff/SoMI_MT-32_malfunction.mp3 Definitely sounds like its playing the wrong instruments. I can think of a few reasons why: - Is SysEx delay enabled? If so, try it without. If not, try turning it on. - Did you play any other …

Re: HardMPU, anyone?

. . . However, I just recently got my hands on a genuine Roland DG MPU-401 from a Yahoo! Japan auction, and hooked it up. Secret of Monkey Island sounds PERFECT on this Pentium II @ 350MHz with the real MPU-401, but sounds like complete garbage when using the HardMPU. Everyone can go listen on …

Re: HardMPU, anyone?

Well a 386DX is not a fast cpu for MI , I just think it's a specific system quirk. I would put the MAX system to use any kind of MPU (Roland or whatever iteration of it) to pentium-mmx. Sure you can use it with faster machines but even with a versatile p1 build you'll need to use cache disable …
