Re: CRT monitor whining

Thanks for the advice. I've noticed that the monitor is totally silent when it's kept cool - if it gets hot (which it does when it's on for extended periods of time) it may begin to whine. It's also more likely to do it when it's running at 60 hz. This leads me to believe that it is in fact a …

CRT monitor whining

I acquired a CRT monitor yesterday for my nostalgic XP rig. CRTs are really hard to find so I was glad to secure one. However, after using it for a while, it's now making a high-pitched whine, that seems to have gotten slightly louder, that comes and goes. Turning the monitor off and back on or …

Sound lost in XP after SP3

I recently acquired a Compaq Presario SR2038X, a very nostalgic machine to me. I'm making it into a decent XP gaming machine. I went all out with the graphics card, a GT 710. While the machine works fine, after upgrading to SP3, my Realtek audio stopped working. I reinstalled the drivers, tried the …

GT 710 with 300w power supply

I ordered myself a real nostalgic treat -- a Compaq Presario SR2038X. While not the very best, it is a very nostalgic machine for me, and, with a few upgrades, a decent XP gaming machine! I've got the CPU and RAM figured out. Now, onto graphics. I'm not craving era-appropriate hardware and I don't …

Re: Digital sound quirks with Vibra 16S

I have no idea how IRQ and DMA work, but when I open Audio Card Configuration in 3.1, it tells me the IRQ is 5, low DMA 1 high DMA 5. I have a SIIG parallel and serial ISA card installed. That could possibly be causing this, but I like it in there, so can I set the IRQ/DMA to something else? I …

Re: Digital sound quirks with Vibra 16S

Both the DOS and 3.1 drivers are installed, it seems, as the SB16 drivers show up in Control Panel. I also have the SB16 programs in a group in Program Manager. I'll attempt to uninstall the Avance drivers (all of them) and see if that does anything

Digital sound quirks with Vibra 16S

I've got a Sound Blaster Vibra 16S in my Compaq Presario 425 AIO 486DX (Overdrive, for that 486DX2 50 MHZ POWER :P ) system running Windows 3.1/DOS 6.22. I tried reinstalling the drivers, no change. FM sound works flawlessly, however, digital sounds (like the CHIMES sound in 3.1, for example) do not …

Capacitors?

I have been reading online in many places how the AC line input filter capacitor can go bad and release the infamous "magic smoke", at seemingly random times. My main 486 box, a Presario 425, is an all-in-one machine so I'm not sure about its power supply, but does anyone know if it uses EVOX-RIFA …

Re: Duke Nukem 3D over floppies

i was stuck in the same situation, wasted so much time with discs and errors. I got a ide - > cf card reader for under $10 1gb cf card and formatted with fdisk to 504mb and fat. Plug to pc with a cf - > usb converter copy files. Attach to your 486 hard disk controller card, configure in bios and …

Re: Overdrive

DN3D runs nicely (well, about 25 fps) when I start it from within DOS, but when there are a lot of things going on at once it can dip down to 15 fps. It's still playable. And the occasional lag makes me feel like someone in the 90s trying to play Pentium-era games on the only computer they have - so …
