I agree. WinME is pretty nice once you ditch the system restore/ restore point thing. Just don't install that part and it's a much more pleasant experience. Especially compared to XP with only 256mb ram. I would definitely go 2000 pro before I'd go XP on such a system.

The main advantage of win95B/C is the fat32 support. Most 486 max at 500mb HDD, so theres no reason to use anything past win95/win95A. Ideally dos 5-6.22 and win 3.0-3.11wfw, but win95 is possible. Without USB ports, there's really no reason to use win98.

do a search to see what versions of mcafee etc were available in 1996, 1995, etc before they required win95. some were setup as bootable floppies that would scan everything before installing, and then had a TSR, if i remember that right. from there its more of seeing what versions you can get.

oldest completely working... TRS80 i think its a model 1 level ii, 4k of ram and cassette tape drive. second is my tandy 1000SL, but it's sidelined until i get a new FDD for it. 8086 i believe that has.
