Is 150W enough for a 486 computer? (And should I be worried about a PSU having 0.3A on the -5V rail?)

I imagine some people here know more about MIDI then I do. I'm planning on getting a MIDI device eventually, for connecting a MIDI keyboard up to my old computer, but does it matter which one I get, or will any of them work for that? Question The First: Define "old computer", please. A 486/586 PC

Reasonable enough, I suppose. (As a side note, (I don't know if this is allowed on the forums or not, so apologies in advance if it's not) if anybody has spare 486-era parts they don't want anymore, I'd be willing to buy it.)

Also, what's generally the safest average number for a power supply? 150w? 250w? And what are some of the better brands from back then?

Also, Windows 98's Device Manager lists the card as an ATi Radeon 9500 Pro/Radeon 9700. Any idea why?

I'm sorry I don't know of any physical signs that would be indicative. Plug and Pray. It's not a big loss, so I guess it's just time to move on. Got the card for free, alongside the FX5200 I bought for a different computer, so there's that. You could always try another motherboard to be sure. False …

I mean, I already did try it out before, and the computer turned off pretty quickly, so I'm guessing it's just a defective card.

Depends on what you want. FX5200 is passively cooled and if you find a 128-bit model it will be more than good enough for any 2x AGP platform. That said, FX5600 is the faster card, obviously. That performance difference will likely not be observable on an AGP 2x platform though, as mentioned above. …

There are a good number of ago 4x/8x cards that will work in a 2x slot. I've used a 6200 in one of my dual P3 440bx systems. I know alot of the GeForce fx line will work in 2x and 4x slots. Is FX5200 or FX5600 better? Depends on what you want. FX5200 is passively cooled and if you find a 128-bit …

1st gen Pentium provides best game play performance for DOS games. Pentium 100mhz thru 233mhz. Some DOS game play on a 486 is choppy. The CPU is not powerful enough. So if you Goal is to play the most DOS games with good performance then get a Pentium CPU. Also the 486 can NOT play MP3’s. I'm not …

Another option is getting a complete OEM system. 486 era used less proprietary parts then later systems and can form a good base for a slightly cheaper price then buying everything separate, Often the I/O and video were onboard on the VL bus and everything else was just stock standard hardware.
