Unisound is meant to be used with ISA sound cards as far as I understand. CMI8338/8738 are PCI sound chips and are quite a different story.

Low-end 386 is usually slower than a 286 clock for clock, if we are talking about386SX, but this is OT. However, it is possible, that your system is "too fast". I'd check the ISA bus clock, some cards get wild if they get overclocked.

That's RadioShack is not the same. It's similar to the Rockfire adapter and is only for analogue devices. It doesn't support digital joystick like the Sidewinder or others.

Yes, that has to be it. If I compare the circuit around it, there is cleary resistor divider and most of the pins would fit, but ERROR, Vtap, SENCE and SHUTDOWN seem not to be connected. However those pins are may be optional.... I have to check out the datasheet once again.
