The PC is fast enough for most win9x titles up to 1998-early 1999 - I see no reason to upgrade it. Some speed sensitive DOS games won't run properly on in tough.

There's no need to go overboard on the GPU. A geforce 3 Ti200 or a Radeon 8500 are the fastest cards you could get for this build. The CPU is a bottleneck for newer cards. max ram support is irrelevant if the motherboard cannot cache it. For 512MB of ram you need a lot of L2 cache, more then a 486 motherboard can support. I think the most ram a 486 board can cache is 128MB with 1MB of L2 cache - I might be wrong, but if I am somebody here will correct me.

Same here OP. I've had over 12 boards fail in the course of 18 months. I've started to replace capacitors (all of them) and in some cases MOSFETS on boards I use (or plant to use) frequently, I'm hoping that will prevent failures. I've also purchased anti static bags for all my stored hardware.

Is there any point in delidding a tualatin? They don't really generate much heat... As for overclocking, as far as I can understand max clocks are limited by the manufacturing process and architecture, not by thermals or power. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
