I guess AudioStation was made by Voyetra, and sold with various cards with OEM branding. With ESS cards, there was AudioRack - probably ESS's own work. And there was similar software provided with GUS, not sure what exactly... Sound Impression?

Indeed. It's possible to have more than two floppy drives - https://www.seasip.info/VintagePC/floppies.html ...but those dual 5.25+3.5 drives aren't of any help here.

Perhaps there was some compression, at least simple skipping of all-zero sectors? A disk image may be 1 GB, but if the files within only occupy 100 MB, then a good imaging software can save a lot on network usage...
