"Int.Type D/W" It probably means Differential Wide. Can't work with a Single Ended host adapter, more: damage is possible.

What do you mean by "memtest"? I guess it's neither MemTest86 nor Memtest86+, as I never could get them to work on a 386, leave alone a 286... Yes, you need to run the motherboard-specific EISA Configuration Utility. It's supposed to detect the new card, and ask for the 3Com diskette with the appropriate .CFG file, eg. !TCM5092.CFG

I also experienced poor performance with some 3C905, but I never bothered to investigate - simply assumed poor quality of the packet driver. If you care about using TCP/IP in DOS on a PCI machine, try some RTL8139 card - I recall them working just fine.
