A pentium mmx might give you more slow down options using setmul. And with all those ISA slots why not get a midi card and maybe a GUS or PAS16? And with those extra pci slots you might want to get a voodoo1....bit beyond 1995 but it's a good early DOS 3d card.

So I don't think it's a via chipset....but you have an onboard yamaha xg....why not just use that? Comes with genuine opl3 too for dos games.

I prepare and maintain most of my retro HDDs on my modern Win10 PC. They are all installed in hot-swap drive bays, so I just take them out, put them in a USB HDD dock on my modern PC, and I can format/backup/restore them, TRIM SSDs etc. Much easier than trying to make stuff like TRIM run under Win98 …

Modern SSDs have no issue with Win98 whatsoever and are extremely fast. If there waa corruption i would have encountered it after running them for over 2 years on multiple win98s. This block alignment stuff sounds like FUD.
