I have a thing for the Creative 3D Blaster II for some reason. And once you start collecting one, you want to stick with it for SLI compatibility reasons.

You might want to exclude the Radeons and 6600 for compatibility reasons. You might want to consider a voodoo3. You might also want to consider a mobo with ISA slots.

Forget about the FX for WinXP or DirectX 9. Dos/98/XP is the impossible build.

Why would you torment yourself with pure DOS on a system without ISA ports? At least use Win98 and take advantage of far better drivers, e.g. under Win98 the SBLive! has pretty good DOS emulation, as does the Audigy.

Saying 3d is like the Savage4 is not really saying much. Matrox has dodgy compatibility with dos games, weak 3d, gained most of its fame as one of the first dual heads graphics cards that supported high resolutions. Yes spdif exists wherever stereo sound exists. Plug a tv into a sound bar or receiver with an optical cable? That's spdif right there over toslink. If anything it was replaced by filthy l Dolby digital...for surround sound.

The savage 4 has weak but barely passable 3d performance into '98, but has excellent S3 dos gaming support. The 5500 is also weak but with good image quality, dvi and fair dos performance. The FX needs as early drivers as possible. I wouldn't touch a Matrox for any build.

Swapped my V2 passthrough cable with one a few millimeters thicker - hopefully it cures this random discoloration quality issue I was experiencing. Currently running quake2 demo mode...wait and see I guess.
