The definition of retro is less important than the utility - do you need a winXP core2duo system? Yes. Do you need a win7 system? I am not aware of any win7 games that don't run under win10, so no. So even if you choose to coin win7 "retro" it doesn't increase the utility or make it worth keeping …

It's only retro if it can't run modern software. I think it's the other way round. I.e. If modern systems can't run it or games from it's era then it's retro. Win 7 will likely run fine on almost any modern hardware, and games from 2007 onwards are likely to run just fine too. Cannot say the same …

SS7 boards typically come with 2-3 ISA slots - if you have the choice of an ISA sound card I would get one. The Audician32 or AWE64 are the best ISA sound cards for Win98 in my experience. The Vortex2 is a good choice though if you only have PCI slots.

So I was able to test the HardMPU with a different Midi, a Yamaha. It sounded good in DOS7 at 330, then again in Win98. I had to shunt the AWE64 down to 300 and then the output from HardMPU sounded good. Even better, the slow-downs and stuttering I was getting in Duke3D with the AWE64 MPU was fixed …
