Re: ARM based CPU on PC

If there comes a time when we could acquire ARM compatible I don't see anything exciting about it. x86 or ARM doesn't matter much at this point. Both are very old CPU architectures with piles of legacy stuff and workarounds. Fair enough. Given that lots of us, here at Vogons, find "exciting" …

Re: ARM based CPU on IBM compatible PC

I don’t think that would be IBM compatible, isn’t it? It would probably be “windows compatible” but the whole idea of IBM compatible was that it is able to run IBM PC software written for the x86 😉 Yes, you are right, it would be more like "Windows Compatible" ARM hardware. Let´s fix that title... …

ARM based CPU on PC

This looks exciting . Qualcomm planning ARM based CPU/SOC for the IBM compatible PC. Although initially geared to laptops, who knows, maybe we could expect them for desktop too: https://www.pcworld.com/article/552285/qualcomm-prophesies-2023-as-the-rebirth-of-its-snapdragon-chips.html What are your …

Re: How over powered are modern PCs?

Agreed. Most of the time current (high end) hardware is overpowered for regular needs. Unless you are going to edit videos (and make a living of it) you won´t need a Threadripper or even a Ryzen 9 (or the Intel equivalents), for instance. I wish we had the possibility to build ARM/Risc V systems, by …

Re: Best GPU for an Athlon MP (WinXP)

I have done an exhaustive comparative between the top 2 chipsets for socket 462: nforce2 and KT880: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=58242 Everything is detailed in that thread. For example at 1027*768 6600gt can achieve some form of playable performance in Far cry 1 at max settings - …

Re: Best GPU for an Athlon MP (WinXP)

With all due respect I think that we are not talking about the same thing. I have done a comparative between nforce2 and KT880 and using a geforce 6600gt there was no difference whatsoever between the 2 platforms in games and benchmarks however with 7800gs nforce2 came out on top! I tested the …

Re: Genecyst Emulator

I have fond memories of Genecyst (late 90s, early 00s). That and Nesticle, Znes, UltraHLE...those were the days of emulation... If you happen to have another lower end (slower single CPU, lower ram) system around, I would try that same Genecyst executable and see what happens.

Re: Best GPU for an Athlon MP (WinXP)

A geForce 6000 series is more suitable for socket 462/A in my experience. I run a GF6600 paired with an Athlon XP 3200, plays Doom3, Far Cry, Half Life 2, Fear, etc very well (don´t have numbers right now but close to 60FPS iirc) at 1280x1024 (5:4) with nice settings. There´s a GF7800 on the way, …
