Re: I'm really struggling with windows 98

What everybody else said, plus: You should avoid using PCI cards until you are sure the machine is stable without them. PCI cards and their drivers are a tricky thing with Win9x in particular. Their interactions with each other and motherboard devices are also a source of problems. I would also …

Re: GeForce 4 vs. GeForce FX?

I think once upon a time I determined 56.64 is the last that works correctly with 440BX. At least with my Abit BF6 and whatever card I was using at the time (probably some FX series card). But I am also pretty sure that it breaks some old games and that's what got me experimenting with older drivers …

Re: GeForce 4 vs. GeForce FX?

45.23 is a DirectX 9 driver from 2003 so yeah that's definitely intended for XP. Maybe that Nature crash is an issue with the XP version of the driver. I don't know if I've ever tried it there. That driver is just a nice one for some old games, like some Lithtech 2.x games IIRC. If you don't find …

Re: Various problems with Vortex 2

We have some older drivers you could try. You can also try using different versions of the A3D API files (aka A3D Support Files). http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/index.php?catid=42&menustate=39,37 But I've always found the Vortex cards/drivers to be buggy. It's hard to say if you are having hardware …

Re: Should I get a cooling fan for a Voodoo 3 2k?

I had one of these back then. The old cases had so little airflow and I was obsessed with overclocking whatever I had. Probably a Matrox G400 at that time. I even attached a Peltier cooler to it at one point. https://web.archive.org/web/20010625115456/http://www.2coolpc.com/Cooling_Solutions/index. …

Re: Cirrus Logic CL-5446

They just aren't all that exciting, which is why you don't read much about them, but yeah they are certainly capable of playing DOS games. These are the sort of cards you'd get in your basic mid '90s SOHO Pentium PC. It'll be slower in DOS than Voodoo3 and GeForce 4, but that might be a good thing …

Re: AGP for Super S7 with weak VRMS?

When you say they didn’t like MVP3 or AliV, are you just talking about the forcing to AGP 1X, or was there stability issues or (hopefully not) damaged components? Just trying to gauge how scared I should be of putting certain cards into my SS7 boards and the more personal experience I can hear …

Re: AGP for Super S7 with weak VRMS?

I don't think I've ever used a VIA MVP3 or Aladdin V board that liked a GeForce, Radeon, or G200/G400. Most of them force AGP 1x in the driver if they detect Super 7 and some later things like VIA KX133 or nForce1. But yeah you see people post about how they find them to be rock solid. I saw an …
