Re: My K7 "Retro Rocket"

And in my opinion he is right about the VIA KT133A, it wasn't a bad chipset at all, and the Epox KTA3(+(Pro)) was one of the best boards available at the time. KT133A had a bad southbridge (686B). Depending on how well the BIOS was written, it could work ok most of the time. But because of its PCI …

Re: 486 Bus Speed

I always was fascinated by the true 486DX/50. 50 MHz bus, 50 MHz CPU. Rare it was. 40 is usually ok, but that's the limit pretty much. On a VLB mobo, you often need wait states added to do even 40 MHz. I've never had a VLB or PCI mobo doing 50 MHz. If you could pull it off, you'd almost certainly …

Re: Building a "new" old rig

Hmmm interesting. Well I am pretty sure that a Voodoo3-5 will get you better quality than with most cards. 3dfx's boasts about that "22-bit" quality weren't for naught; they actually do some nifty stuff to the 16-bit output to make it look better than other cards of the time. Certainly a tough thing …

Re: Building a "new" old rig

I don't really consider JK2 all that retro. You are best off with modern hardware for it. When the game first came out I had the original Radeon DDR and a Duron 1000. It didn't run all that great. The game benefits a lot from a graphics card with some modern oomph so you get good filtering and AA. …

Re: Comedy Gold...Worse Fallout 3 Preview...EVER

I'll reserve judgment on this game until I've played it. I generally try to avoid game previews these days. I'm also not that interested in the extreme uptight opinions at NMA... As someone who has dumped many hours into TES games and seen all of their problems but still enjoyed them a good bit, I …

Because I found out that the mouse needs to still support serial. It doesn't work with mice that are USB+PS2. I had to buy a cheap Labtec serial+PS2 ball …

Re: 486 Motherboard

Looks like this SIS 49x chipset layout was popular :happyhappy: Hmmm. Well whenever I see similar designs across manufacturers, I think that they were all following reference designs from the chipset maker. BTW, I'm fairly sure that the reason my uber-homebrew PS/2 mouse port doesn't work is that …
