Re: Building an Ultimate PCI 486 System

in PC Emulation
Oh Ok. Well I just recapped the thread I'm sure you found at Cpumuseum.de and told you right at the end that I think it was a waste of money in its time. Hell, it was the biggest rip off CPU in consumer history at, I believe, around $500. Good thing I got it free. It is indisputable though that it …

Re: Old graphics card recommendation?

in DOS
Yup they will work together fine. The only issue is getting games to pick the desired accelerator for D3D. For that, you want 3DCC. I've attached it. It's only for Win9x tho. Not sure what you'd do in XP or 2K.

Re: Old graphics card recommendation?

in DOS
Radeon cards have VESA issues. I've had TIE Fighter CD (640x480 VESA) actually lock up on them. Get some sort of NVIDIA card. GeForceFX is great for retro rigs because its VESA works well and its 3D capabilities include palletized texture support.

Re: What's your Retro-Rig?

in PC Emulation
I currently have running: Abit BF6 440BX P3 450@600 256MB PC133 160GB WD Geforce FX 5950 Diamond Monster Sound MX300 + SCD15 Ensoniq Soundscape Elite Sil0680A Ultra 133 PCI card Intel 1000GT NIC Win98SE I change things around weekly pretty much though. I am more into messing with the hardware than …

Re: Radeons and FSAA on old games

in PC Emulation
Don't forget Voodoo5 FSAA. It's AA is probably better than AA on Radeon 9200 on down and GeForce 2 (and 4MX) on down. But if you have a Radeon 9700/9600/9500/newer, the 6X MSAA in addition to "adaptive AA" (for alpha texturing) they can do will be mighty fine in old 3D games. ATI did one giant leap …

Crusader No Remorse/No Regret @ 48 KHz

in DOS
Did you know that Crusader No Remorse and No Regret can mix audio at up to 48KHz? I was digging in Regret's Crusader.cfg file and found "mixrate" :). It defaults to 22050 Hz it seems. I upped that to 48000 Hz as that's what my Ensoniq Soundscape can do natively, and WOW does it sound a lot better! …

Re: SB16 CT1740 + SCD15 + Dark Forces = Freeze!

in PC Emulation
I don't think the P5A was necessarily at fault after all. I've reassembled my rig for the dozenth time this month, this time with my Abit 440BX board. When I run the Tualatin CPU at its 1400 MHz (133 bus), MIDI again won't work off of the MPU-401 port. But if I clock it down to 1050/100, it works! …

Re: Building an Ultimate PCI 486 System

Oh I know that POD83 is a pain, but it is still a very interesting little CPU. It actually has the same amount of L1 cache as a Pentium MMX. I had a go with Am5x86 160, Cx5x86 120, and POD83 @ 100 a couple of years ago just for kicks. In FPU-heavy games (I tested Jedi Knight and Quake), POD83 is …

Diamond Monster Sound MX200 on eBay

in PC Emulation
I'm not sure if anyone will care, but I've identified a neat sound card on eBay. The Diamond Monster Sound MX200 is one of Diamond's early A3D-capable accelerated PCI cards. It also has a MIDI daughtercard equipped with a 4MB Roland patch set and Dream synth. Fun little tidbit: This "Roland" patch …

Re: SB16 CT1740 + SCD15 + Dark Forces = Freeze!

in PC Emulation
Yeah the MX300 is a Vortex 2 PCI card. The DOS driver is really quite compatible. It seems better than what Ensoniq came up with for AudioPCI (and Creative used thereafter for Live!, etc). It doesn't need EMM386. I just wish it did SB16 emulation, but the Aureal engineers claimed in a usenet post …

Re: Need advice on Win9x/DOS Gaming RIG

I didn't mention having a Vortex, so not sure what you mean? It just occured to me after the discussion about NF2 and Win95 above. NF2 can cause problems for Win9x drivers. Vortex is one example I've personally come across. 1) Would there be a need for the Voodoo2? I have looked, but been able to …

Re: Building an Ultimate PCI 486 System

in PC Emulation
It's not really worth putting a Obsidian2 in there. Even a Voodoo1 will be starved by a 486. They really just do not have the oomph to do 3D of that caliber. A Pentium Overdrive would be as best as can be, because it has a much better FPU, but even it would still be super constricted by the 32-bit …

Re: SB16 CT1740 + SCD15 + Dark Forces = Freeze!

in PC Emulation
I've actually given up on the SB16. Believe it or not but the Aureal Vortex SBPro emulation sounds vastly better than the SB16 running in 16-bit mode. I played a bit of OMF2097 last night and it was just night and day! Disgusting quality from that SB16, honestly. It sounded almost mono and just not …

Re: SB16 CT1740 + SCD15 + Dark Forces = Freeze!

Hey look it's my scans on Wikipedia. The Elite scan is the busted one I tossed. You can even see the cap I had to add to it because one broke off and got lost! That wasn't why it broke though. It worked for a long time with that ghetto cap. The card just stopped working one day. I think I static- …

Re: Need advice on Win9x/DOS Gaming RIG

nForce 2 has more than one PCI bus, doesn't it? That will cause an issue with Vortex cards in 9x. There's a registry workaround out there, but I'm not sure how reliable it is. To OP: Well, just build something and let us know how it goes. 😀 One can never tell exactly what the best DOS rig will be.
