Re: copy protection

in Milliways
I'm not targeting you specifically, WolverineDK. There are more than a few threads on the forum that have ended rather unhappily... I just want everyone to remember what the forums are about.

Re: copy protection

in Milliways
There is a bit of bitterness on the forums lately. I can only guess that some folks are having a rough time in real life... Hey, it happens to everyone. Let's just remember that this forum is about gaming. And in the end, nothing here really matters all that much and it isn't the end of the world …

Re: copy protection

Defective sectors is a fact of life. Your newest SATA harddisk is full of defective sectors. That is why you format a disk so the computer can make a map out of the good and bad sectors. Actually that's not quite true. A new hard disk doesn't have bad sectors that are exposed to the system it is in …

Re: What's the best graphics card for VESA 3.0?

in PC Emulation
3dfx cards have lots of VESA issues. Some of them are fixed with the VESAfix util you can get for them. But even with that, I get some strange flickering artifacts in various games. So, the NV cards are better than 3dfx here. Banshee and Voodoo 3,4,5 are actually fairly similar hardware. Banshee was …

Re: Master Of Orion Music

in DOS
you could just record it yourself with any audio recording app (such as free Audacity ). Start recording, open up DOSBOX and the game, and then crop out the extra. If you are using General MIDI and a card with a synth (not the Windows Roland GS softsynth), you will have to set the recording input …

Re: Creative Wave Blaster...yuck?

in PC Emulation
I think it's worth mentioning that protected mode games don't work with AWEUTIL and probably not with the Windows 9x-based MPU401 emulation either. If these games don't have native AWE support, you won't be able to use the synth at all. I believe that was a problem with early versions of Doom. …

Re: Creative Wave Blaster...yuck?

in PC Emulation
ahh k. I would use an AWE32 for my SCD-15 hosting needs if only it worked on there! My AWE, SB32, and 2 SB16s just gave me stuck notes, wrong notes, and other bad things. Nevermind that they have some terrible output circuitry on those Creative cards that gives static, pops, clicks, etc. The people …

Re: What's the best graphics card for VESA 3.0?

in PC Emulation
I'm having good luck with a GeForce FX 5600, believe it or not. Though I suppose I haven't used any VBE 3 specific stuff. It works quite well for SVGA VBE 1.2/2.0 DOS games tho. Better than quite a few other cards that I've tested (lots lol). I don't know if Radeons have VBE 3, but they are trouble …

Re: My oldschool rigs (updated again)

I've been messing a lot with setting up a DOS rig that runs late DOS games extremely well. I have access to lots of video cards, CPUs, sound cards. Current setup: Abit BF6 440BX Pentium III 600E (100x6) 256 MB SDRAM GeForce FX 5600 AGP Ensoniq Soundscape Elite Diamond Monster Sound MX300 + SCD-15 …

Re: Creative Wave Blaster...yuck?

in PC Emulation
Yeah I said earlier that you can load Soundfonts in 9x and then play the games with them. You need to turn on MPU-401 emulation in the AWE control panel and set the game to General MIDI. I believe if you set the game to AWE32 specifically, it will use the awful ROM instead. It may actually be …

Re: In Search Of The Ultimate... [DOS] Game Machine

Win95 almost wasn't that great for gaming. If it hadn't been for the guys who came up with DirectX and jammed it down the non-gamer MS execs' throats, it wouldn't have been all that much better than Win 3.x. It's an interesting angle for sure. I think that without Windows 9x and the DirectX monopoly …

Re: In Search Of The Ultimate... [DOS] Game Machine

in PC Emulation
Yeah you are quite right that there certainly are games that use a 16-bit card. Off the top of my head, I remember the Crusader games benefiting immensely. The MOD music sounds much better. STTNG AFU also sounds a lot better. It actually also ran noticeably faster when I used the Soundscape vs. the …

Re: In Search Of The Ultimate... [DOS] Game Machine

in PC Emulation
I'm not sure how many DOS games use 16-bit audio or exceed 22 kHz sampling rate but the number is probably rather low. So SBPRO would do the trick and it has basically zero compatibility problems. I used one alongside a Ensoniq Soundscape for years. When the game had native support, the Ensoniq was …

In Search Of The Ultimate... [DOS] Game Machine

in PC Emulation
Ok. I scanned some choice issues of my very old issues of CGW years ago to read during classes (hehe!). It occurred to me that you guys would probably really dig this stuff, as I do. So I've posted one of the articles that apply to our little hobby here. This is an Ultimate Game Machine article from …

Re: Need desperate help!

Virge is pretty good for DOS games though because it's based on the older 2D cores. It also accelerates the only accelerated version of Terminal Velocity!!!!! (!!!!!!! lol !!!!!!) There is a Tomb Raider patch too. Those are called DIP switches, by the way. You need to look everywhere on that board …
