Re: Creative Wave Blaster...yuck?

in PC Emulation
Every Creative wavetable offering is pretty awful for DOS games, IMO... And that doesn't even take into considering the static, pops, clicks and other crap that comes out of those cards. Or how if you attach a SCD-10 or -15 you'll almost certainly have issues with it because the MPU-401 port is …

Re: Matching CPUs with Voodoo cards

in PC Emulation
I should add that I was writing about how to clean off the excess glue, not how to separate the chip from the heatsink. Soaking the whole card with evil solvents isn't going to help get those apart. 😀 Well, actually it might but I bet that stuff would do other bad things to the card 🤣.

Re: Matching CPUs with Voodoo cards

That glue should dissolve if you use something like Oops or Goof Off. These are powerful solvents made of toluene, xylene and some other evil crap. Kinda like carburetor cleaner. Just get a little pool around the glue and wait a bit, rub, add more, rub, etc. It will take a while though. Do it where …

Re: Creative Wave Blaster...yuck?

If you can get the game to run in Windows 9x, you can use a soundfont on AWE for your DOS games. You just have to make sure that the MPU-401 emulation for AWE is enabled in the AWE control panel, upload your soundfont, and choose General MIDI in the game. At least that is what I remember from when I …

Re: WTB: 5 1/4 PC floppy drive

in PC Emulation
Actually I dropped it off at a recycling place. :happyhappy: It came with a Gateway 2000 Pentium 90 that I found in a giveaway pile at my university years ago. I used it for years but decided to get rid of some of my excessive retro collection and tossed that whole baby AT desktop case with the …

Re: Terminator Skynet problem

Strangely, no matter what, if I start this game without EMM386 loaded (just HIMEM), I get a DOS4GW error 2001 (0Dh). I think the same thing happens from a completely clean boot (F5). According to this page, this is a GPF. http://www.tenberry.com/dos4g/faq/err2001.html DOS32A bombs out in the same …

Re: Terminator Skynet problem

Ok, so it's not stable at all in Win9x either. It is the "most stable" there though, as in I can go in and out of buildings more than zero times (maybe 10 times before it crashes).... I'm at a loss. I've even tried out different DOS mouse and cdrom drivers. I really think the SVGA mode just plain …

Re: Terminator Skynet problem

Did you try earlier versions of DOS like v6.22 instead of Dos 7.xx? Well, DOS 6.22 did nothing for it. Nor did my treasured PPro mobo with only 64MB RAM installed. Every single combination of hardware and DOS has had the exact same lockup/crash problem with the game. I did see a DOS4GW exception of …

Re: Terminator Skynet problem

Did you try earlier versions of DOS like v6.22 instead of Dos 7.xx? I have considered that, but I find it odd that the game would have problems with DOS 7 considering it was made in 1996. I've had so very few problems with DOS 7 that I haven't wanted to deal with locking myself to FAT16. It is …

Re: Terminator Skynet problem

Well, I decided to see how stable Skynet is with real hardware. So, I built: K6 III Alladin 5 -based mobo S3 Virge Vortex 2 + SCD15 128mb RAM Win98SE (ran game under pure DOS 7 though) config.sys himem.sys emm386.exe noems dos=high, umb oakcdrom.sys autoexec.bat aureal dos audio driver mscdex …

Re: Pentium 90 Socket 7

in PC Emulation
maybe this will help you. http://www.cpushack.net/UpgradeProcessors.html Very nice page you found there! :) I hadn't actually heard of those voltage adapters before. I guess they were in specialized upgrade kits? (I remember reading about something by Evergreen that might have been a little like …

Re: Pentium 90 Socket 7

in PC Emulation
He's just saying that you need socket 7 if the CPU needs separate core and IO voltages. Pentium MMX can't be used on socket 5 without a voltage adapter. I believe the reason that Pentium 166 and 200 (non-MMX) don't work on Socket 5 is insufficient multipliers, not voltage requirements.
