Supermicro P6SKE or Megatrends FX83A

in PC Emulation
My first post-486 puter, a major milestone in my life lol, was built on a Megatrends FX83-A II. This board is actually a relabeled Supermicro P6SKE II (which is itself almost identical to plain P6SKE). I've been trying to find one out there, but they are very rare. Does anyone know of a source of …

Re: Ensoniq Soundscape Elite question

in PC Emulation
The simplest way to test it would be to load up the FX Toolkit in Windows and play some MIDI files. Try to apply effects to the output and see what happens. In DOS, the ESP is initialized automatically on boot with reverb and chorus for music, I believe. You can send the card sysex commands to …

Useful links: Ensoniq FTP mirror EMU's Ensoniq downloads (final drivers) There are some very useful txt files in that FTP . Guides. If you change the card from its default jumpers, the driver installer usually won't set the drivers up correctly. The installer apparently isn't able to detect the port …

Re: Ensoniq Soundscape Elite question

I believe 534 is what you are looking for. Or 608 if that is what you have it jumpered to. That's what Dark Forces and TIE Fighter will pick for Soundscape digital audio if you do an auto detect. 534 is the default jumper setting.

Re: Which vlb video card to get?

in PC Emulation
Dreamiest VLB cards: DOS: ET4000/W32p. Very compatible and very fast. WIN: Maybe a S3 Trio VLB. Or Mach64? Cirrus Logic cards are okay for DOS, but they are nothing compared to an ET4000/W32p. I'd stay away from that old ATI card.... Always try to use Scitech display doctor. Useful links: http:// …

Re: Best motherboard for Coppermine?

in PC Emulation
if you want to use a 133 MHz FSB chip (the B variant of P3), you'll want an i815-based mobo with its proper AGP divider. A 440BX at 133 will have a hugely overclocked AGP slot (88 Mhz vs. 66 MHz) and video cards will usually not work quite right (if at all). I'd dig around for a Tualatin-compatible …

Re: Hercules thriller 3d with rendition verite 2200 chip

in PC Emulation
heh yeah I know what you mean by needing lots of room. I have lots of old hardware too. It is a disappointment that the Verite cards have such bad quality. But, in games where the resolution is low, they look fine. It's when you try to push a high res and refresh rate that they fall apart. Remember …

The latest drivers for V2200 are at this site: http://www.micron.com/support/itg/dl.aspx It will work fine in Windows 98. The bad picture quality is caused by the card's output circuitry (not the GPU). A lot of cards from those days had bad analog output quality. I have a Thriller 3D myself, but …

Re: 2002 and earlier gaming

DOS 1.0?! That's some ancient DOS there. Win95 has DOS 7 built in. Always worked fine for me for DOS games. I used it from 96 thru 2001 or so. 98 has the same or similar DOS version.

off a game cd. btw, I've managed to run NFS3 on XP with DX9c. I did have to replace that renderer DLL as you did. But no special DX files were needed. The game just doesn't work well with modern hardware or OSs. It was buggy back in its time, let alone now with unsupported stuff never dreamed off.

Re: Is there any Socket 370 Board with 3 ISA Slots?

in PC Emulation
Dunno. Most mobos in those days had at most 2 slots. Then they started to go to 1 slot... 3 slots might be pretty rare. Some of the Super 7 boards had 3 ISA slots. I hated them cuz they didn't have enough PCI as a result. :) Here's one: Shuttle HOT-681Z i440ZX Socket-370 http://www.anandtech.com/mb/ …
