Re: Is there any Socket 370 Board with 3 ISA Slots?

in PC Emulation
Dunno. Most mobos in those days had at most 2 slots. Then they started to go to 1 slot... 3 slots might be pretty rare. Some of the Super 7 boards had 3 ISA slots. I hated them cuz they didn't have enough PCI as a result. :) Here's one: Shuttle HOT-681Z i440ZX Socket-370 http://www.anandtech.com/mb/ …

Re: Mobos with SDRAM and AGP?

in PC Emulation
The early P4 boards with the original 845 chipset used SDRAM. The only other option at the time for P4 was the super expensive RDRAM-based mobos. P4 does not like the limited bandwidth of SDRAM, tho, and it makes the systems much slower than a high-end P3. I, too, had to upgrade one. It had a …

The only way to guarantee compatibility with all DOS Glide games is probably to get a Voodoo1. Otherwise getting some games to work, if possible at all, will be quite complicated. Voodoo1-specific stuff, especially. I don't think any DOS Glide games use AA. Certainly not the AA I was referring to …

Re: Building a vintage pentium system...

That means that if you want more than 64MB, the L2 cache won't be able to cache data above 64 MB. The rest of the RAM will be a lot slower to access. 64 MB is probably plenty for a P100 tho! Going higher can cause problems with some DOS games, believe it or not. I have a PPRO with 128MB and haven't …

btw, there's a very capable Glide emulator out there by a fellow who calls himself Zeckensack. I've run quite a few games under it. It even uses pixel shaders to emulate some of Glide's more interesting features/quirks. I've run Wing Commander Prophecy, Diablo 2, and Unreal with it. http://www. …

95C is faster than 98SE. I've run both on a 486. Trust me on this. :) The difference is astounding. 98lite is probably as fast as 95C because it uses the 95 shell. That might be the way to go, but it's kinda a complex process. And do you really need any of 98's features on a P100? Not really. No USB …

Re: 2002 and earlier gaming

2002 was the time of the R9700. So I'd go for one of those instead, if you are going to play some DirectX 8 games. Not sure how well it will do for DOS stuff. I've never really tried R300 boards out much in DOS. If you need Glide, get a Voodoo5 5500. Then you can have antialiasing with your Glide. …

Re: Building a vintage pentium system...

I have a Pentium Pro and a 486 at home. :) I've only once seen a 430NX board. It came out of a old Gateway 2000. That might be the best way to go. Look for a old Dell or Gateway system on eBay. Otherwise, a Socket 7 board with 430FX/VX/TX would work fine too. You could go even newer, with a VIA MVP3 …

I started out computing on a Tandy 1000 TX. Seeing Deskmate running is something I haven't seen in about 15 years now. It's funny to see Desk Mate telling you it's June 5, 2007! Thanks for all the effort WD! :) Now I'll have to waste hours setting up a DOSBOX install with some of my old games. Space …

Re: Star Trek AFU - Audio pops

Tried Gulikoza's 0.70 and the Daum Cafe 0.70. Both do the same thing. Might have to dig up an older build then. And yea, I too remember the game being quirky even on a real 486 with physical audio hardware it has native support for. edit: Nope, 0.65 still has popping....

Star Trek AFU - Audio pops

Anyone manage to get rid of the popping? Uhg! I've tried increasing the block size and prebuffer, along with going to SBPRO2 instead of SB16. Nothing helps. I am using DOS32A instead of DOS4GW. Game seems to be working fine otherwise (except for the inability to set 640x480 for videos).

Re: 16-Bit VESA graphics?

Does 0.70 add support for 16-bit color? I can seem to get A Final Unity to do it if I run the UniVBE option in the setup, but the actual game won't load past the first cinematic. The game has options for 32,768 colors and 65,536 colors. 320x200 - 640x480. edit: Well, it seems I just can't use any of …

Re: 3dfx Banshee/Voodoo3 VESA Fix

in Deep Thought
A Voodoo Banshee is NOT a Voodoo3. A Voodoo Banshee is a Voodoo2 stripped down chip (1 texture unit versus 2 texture units) with 2D capabilities added, while Voodoo3 was the substitute of Voodoo2 chips. Uh, actually a Voodoo3 is extremely similar to Banshee. A Voodoo3 is basically a Banshee with …

Re: Fascinating X-Wing wiki article update

in Milliways
Yeah, the realism argument is one I remember from back when the two games were competing though. X-Wing does have a much less rigid feel to its mechanics. Personally, I think anyone who ignores either series is just robbing themselves of a lot of fun though. My fav space game mechanics are in the …
