If there is no bios update, you can use some overlay, like Ontrack Dynamic Disk Overlay. You will be able to use any hdd you want.

I tried some 2GB and 6GB hard disks. HDDs are 100% OK. I've also tried different channels. It's definitely some defective element on the motherboard. But I don't know how to start with this case. (it's not only issue with IDE, but floppy, IDE, and sometimes graphics).
