Re: Retro confessions. What are yours?

Rubber-dome keyboards aren't that bad, and can actually be better for games than the clicky keyboards. Also, I hate PS/2, it always has issues with my hardware and seems to be from the era where peripherals were made cheaper. Serial and AT 4 life baby!!!!!! I also don't care for ATX form factor …

Re: OPN music on an ISA sound card?

The FM chip itself needs a DAC for some of its analog sound output, which is one of the YM30xx series parts. AY part in the OPN/A/B chips has analog output from the chip and FM + ADPCM side is digital and needs a dedicated Yamaha made DAC for it. You then mix the analog sources together into final …

Re: OPN music on an ISA sound card?

Just found a translated datasheet: http://nemesis.hacking-cult.org/MegaDrive/Documentation/YM2608J%20Translated.PDF . I'll need to read through it before I can figure out what a board design may look like. Do you have any recommendations for a separate DAC? Preferably, it should be 8-bit and support …

Re: OPN music on an ISA sound card?

If you don't plan to play more than one sound at a time it can work, but for more things get difficult since the chip is really only meant to play stuff from its RAM which is assumed to be non-changing / infrequently updated, i.e for short SFX and drum sounds etc. The RAM is pretty slow to update …

Re: OPN music on an ISA sound card?

I just checked on it, and the OPNA does support single-channel 8-bit ADPCM sound between 2 and 16khz. So theoretically, it should be possible to playback some audio samples on the chip. Though it would be better to introduce an onboard DAC with less limitations.

Re: OPN music on an ISA sound card?

YM2203 is right at home on an 8-bit ISA card. OPN/OPM family generally sound a lot different than OPL. I can't think of any soundtrack for one that might be mistaken as coming from the other. Maybe the OPL3 4-op mode would sound similar but it's hardly used and still lacks detune and some of the …

Re: OPN music on an ISA sound card?

Years later, I tried the game on MAME, but felt that something about the sound was off. If you haven't tried lately, you may want to try again later this month (or now, if you can compile your own). OPN emulation improvements went into MAME just a few weeks ago and will be released with MAME 0.230. …

Re: OPN music on an ISA sound card?

AFAIK, very few games used the OPL3 chip to its full potential. The Cybersphere soundtrack is among those rare examples. That game actually requires OPL3 to work. It's not compatible with OPL2 devices. I'm hoping that my sound engine can be used with other old games and new projects (with a little …

Re: OPN music on an ISA sound card?

I think the only way to end up with decent GM -> FM would be if it's an OPL3 in 4-op mode. At that point it would have 6 voices with better capability than the YM2151/YM2164 found in the Yamaha CX5M/SFG-01/DX21/DX27/DX100/FB-01 since they have selectable waveforms to modulate with or to be …

Re: OPN music on an ISA sound card?

I am really starting to think that the OPL2/3 is very underutilized and that I have been spoiled with great utilization of similar chips. I am wondering if there is any way to create a decent GM -> FM converter. I do like Doom's OST on FM, but some other examples just don't sound good to me.

Re: OPN music on an ISA sound card?

I love listening to different chiptune music and like the sound of FM synthesis, but I can't help but feel that the Yamaha OPL chips are quite lacking in character. I think how OPL3 sounds may depend on a couple of things. Firstly and foremost, was the music specifically made with FM synth in mind, …

Re: OPN music on an ISA sound card?

Support in what way ? VGM player and some other music formats player shouldn't be too difficult to do. I'm now thinking how it would be nice if the VGM plugin for winamp/xmplay can be made to support the actual chips on expansion card in a PC, though these chips are very slow to access which will …

Re: OPN music on an ISA sound card?

The chips themselves are not compatible with any IBM PC games so there's limited use outside VGM playback and such. PC98 software isn't going to be compatible for a variety of reasons, a lot of patching will be necessary to deal with both hardware and software incompatibilities... I'm not worried …

OPN music on an ISA sound card?

I love listening to different chiptune music and like the sound of FM synthesis, but I can't help but feel that the Yamaha OPL chips are quite lacking in character. Sure, they hold a lot of nostalgia value but just don't sound right to me. Every time I hear Wolfenstein 3D music, I constantly hear …
