Interesting. Those cards usually signal if 12V power connector is not connected or loose. (Not sure if it can detect variations/fluctuations.)

At regular clock, Athlon is too fast. As is Pentium III. You may see broken textures, I can confirm that for 1Ghz CPU. What was the upper limit ... Pentium II ~300Mhz ?

Not sure how you could check that, since BGA chips are used. Reference Pro comes with very hot Samsung 2.8ns BGA chips. Some vendors (Sapphire, FIC) also used Etrontech 2.8ns. Just did 😉. I guess I stopped reading after seeing garbled output pattern. BTW, reference design R300 cards were built like military-grade compared to everything else on the market at the time. I'm really interested to see what the issue is.

It's dead, Jim. Use known-to-work aftermarket coolers (Zalman VF700 / VF900 / FC-ZV9 or Arctic ATI silencer 1) or remove the shim.

I went with V3 and V5 for my P3 1GHz and Geode (k7) builds. PII 450 got V2 and GeForce256 SDR .... tested also TNT2, but GeForce was better even on PII.

Banshee drivers do not use 3DNow! ... not sure if that affects K7, or just K6. I suspect both.

I have very good experience running V3 3000 with Geode NX1750 on SIS chipset (DDR). CPU is cool (1.25V), SSE equipped and very fast at 1.4GHz. (I usually run it at 800 or 1000MHz, 1.4GHz causes various speed issues in some games).

For i815, I'd say Intel Desktop Board :). Totally non-overclockable but usually high quality Japanese caps and decent build quality. Some of them came with integrated Creative sound chips.
