Re: SBEMU: Sound Blaster emulation on AC97

Doom DMX implementation is a complete mess. What you can do is: - Try IRQ 5 instead of IRQ 7 (I have one system which will not work on on 7) - Edit the doom configuration file; set the the address; irq and dma all to "0", then use a correct BLASTER setting for the correct one. (The code will …

Re: SBEMU: Sound Blaster emulation on AC97

Also what version of Doom are you using? I've only used Ultimate Doom with sbemu. But usually Doom, Duke3d, Quake, and Wolf3d work mostly fine. It's the deeper dos library that can get problematic. Have you tried using a different irq and dma? Although strange that Quake works fine. Maybe Crazii …

Re: SBEMU: Sound Blaster emulation on AC97

Assuming the UMB region it gets loaded into is "Genuinely Free" (no RAM, no ROM, no strange memory mapped IO device sitting there), then it wont hurt anything, and keeps a few kb of conventional from being used. SADLY-- I have noticed on modern-ish machines (which SBEMU is made for), that "Actual …

Re: SBEMU: Sound Blaster emulation on AC97

What irq, dma, etc is sbemu using? Mine defaults to a220, i7, d1. The doom setup doesn't complain? Have you tried just music and no sound, and vice versa? Are you using the beta4 release of sbemu? You may want to try an earlier version too. Also, maybe try the freedos bootdisk in case it's related …

Re: SBEMU: Sound Blaster emulation on AC97

Are we supposed to be using "LH" when loading hdpmi and sbemu? I haven't been. That might be related to your issues? Also, did you set the right irq and dma for Doom using setup.exe? Quake and Wolfenstein just use your "Set Blaster" environment variable, but Doom does not. You also might try using …

Re: SBEMU: Sound Blaster emulation on AC97

I had got some "HP T510 Thin Clients" to test with SBEMU, from what I can tell they have a "VIA Eden X2 U4200" CPU, "Chrome9 HD" video, and "VT8237A/VT8251 HDA" sound, so I installed an SD to IDE adapter on the IDE pins, and then installed DOS 7.1 from CD onto a SD card. I setup my CONFIG.SYS like …

Re: Babylon 5 remake?

in Milliways
I liked Babylon 5 a lot, and would not mind a remake, unfortunately given the "Netflix" type approach it will likely be given, I suspect it will only be at most two seasons, and that likely means it will not get finished, or it will be very compressed with a lot of stuff left out from the original …

Re: What's the dumbest retro mistake you've made?

in Milliways
I just remembered two, I once "gleeked" on a mainboard and short-circuited it. I gleek randomly all the time and it happened when I was testing my Soyo slot1 system. There wasn't any permanent damage but I learned to keep my mouth shut when I'm working with electronics. I used to store my spare …

Re: What's the dumbest retro mistake you've made?

in Milliways
I am not sure if this would count has retro, but it was an old hard drive in one of my older computers, back in the late 1990s around 1998, I had a 4GB hard drive I used for backup, unfortunately the power connector plastic was broken on this hard drive and you could, if not paying attention, plug …

Re: Using JB Weld as thermal epoxy?

in Milliways
JB weld is metal filled. Seems like it would conduct heat reasonably well. Anyone tried it? I have used JB Weld a lot, and JB Weld has failed a lot on me, even though I always go the extra mile and rough up the surface and clean with rubbing alcohol to remove any oil and dust/dirt, but when it …

Re: Need help with chinese IP camera security

in Milliways
I recently got this freebie chinese IP camera from a friend. He never used it because he claims it's not secure. It shows up on the wireless network as a cloudcam and it has no security added at all, not even WEP. Anyone in range can connect to it. I tried the YCC365 Plus app it came with, it's …

Re: Is there any reason to keep a Win9X machine around for gaming except for fun or nostalgia?

I tend to have Win98 installed on many of my DOS computers just so I can use a thumb drives and some of the better and easier to use system utilities and file managers, but if Win98 works well enough on that machine I will install Win9X games on it, I also like to have Win3.1 installed on them has …

Re: Collecting rants

One thing that annoys me is when people post eBay listings of rare items that sold within hours or even minutes of the end of the auction/sale. This even happens on Vogons despite its policy on eBay listings. Unless I misunderstand: Technically I cannot do that with my Ebay account, once a bid is …

Re: Collecting rants

I just got a full tower Dell GX260 in today, they put this large computer into the smallest box it would fit into, with a very small amount of padding at the top and bottom of the box, the padding was made up of a few pieces of waded up paper, the side of the case was broken off during shipping and …
