Pretty sure the Mobility 9700 was available as 256MB/128-bit configuration. I wonder if it’s some kind of laptop GPU shoved on an AGP card.

Thanks for that, so you are saying that pin 5 of the PS/2 connector is actually connected to both pins 6 and 4 of the DB9 serial port? Providing both Data Set Ready and Data Terminal Ready signals. I'll have to dig out the machine and try again!

To try and free the heatsink I would try leaving it in the freezer overnight and see if afterward the glue is brittle enough to either be twisted or levered free. If it doesn’t pop off after freezing with a modicum of force then it’s not coming off.

Well, things took a turn. Bought the PCB and BOM required to make a goldfinger device. Gigabyte GA-7IXE is due tomorrow. I’ve also bought a K7M and a supposedly dead K7V. I’ve also got a Pluto CPU on the way. Many things to hopefully try.

I'm currently using a Lenovo W510, i7 820QM, 24GB RAM, Quadro FX 880M (essentially a Geforce 330M) for an XP (and Vista, dual-boot) gaming laptop. Seems good enough for Far Cry which is what I'm currently playing. Either of the above will be more than good enough for XP in my opinion.

Indeed. Memory and bus bandwidth are key. Unfortunately even though I’ve modded the BIOS of my MS6191 to allow changing the FSB, the system won’t boot at the next option above 100MHz (120MHz), so I’ve run out of ideas. I can’t find a better Slot A board, at least for a reasonable price.
