I'm the OP of that other thread, I tried two of these and neither would work. It's always possible its a compatibility issue but my system has a "&E" DX4-100 installed and it works just fine.

I know Windows 2000 (and probably NT) set up a boot menu, maybe you can use this to manage the different operating systems? Having Win 95 and 98 on the same machine is a bit hacky though, requires modifying MSDOS.SYS to change directories. Not sure how this would work with a DOS installation. The …

I have a similar system and have been using it for Win 9x apps. Do you have another HDD? The system will hold 4 IDE drives and I think anything up to 8.4 GB will work.

Horun: I sent you a PM, I'd be happy to take you on your offer. Actually, the seller was gracious enough to send a 2nd chip (that looks identical to the first), so that would provide an even better test subject. I tried the 2nd chip in my computer and predictably I could not get it to post.

The early P4's were not very good especially when paired with regular SDRAM. I think it was typical for a P3 1 GHz to outperform the P4 1.3 GHz in a lot of tests, and it was a lot more consistent. I would vote for a P3 system.

Is there any trick to getting Ontrack to work with multiple large disks? It works fine on a single 4 GB Fireball or a single 250 GB WD Caviar, but I can't get it to detect both the Fireball and Caviar at the same time. I've tried them on different ATA channels, master/slave, etc.

Thanks everyone. I forgot about the "boot from command prompt" option, which worked! I was able to run the Win98 installer from that and make a working boot disk. Windows was still messed up but now I can use the boot disk and format the drives.

The Windows 98 installation on my 486 got corrupted and it will no longer boot. I have a USB HDD enclosure. Can I somehow pre-install Windows from a different computer on this HDD using the USB enclosure? The 486 won't boot from a CD directly, and I don't have any boot disks that work.
