Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@Chadti99 Nice numbers and interesting results. I recently picked up one of these. Good board. Did you notice that VLB does not work properly with the 1997 BIOS? I found the 1995 BIOS was the last one with proper VLB initialization. Had some issues getting 1024k on mine. Did you find the same with …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@phsipkov Glad I could share some interesting oddities here! Indeed, Frankenboards are my favorite. Something about cobbled-together hardware fascinates me in a way it should not. Undoubtedly, it can be frustrating, but it’s always neat to see something working that otherwise shouldn’t  Will …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@pshipkov WinTune2 score was added to the main post, but only used ARK1000VL at the moment. With Am5x86-160: 7963 KPixels/sec (7906 KPixels/sec @ POD100) Really like that wide POD100 post! Interesting stuff. Lots of neat boards I've never seen/heard of. Kinda wild that some late assemblies like the …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@pshipkov Took another gander at the QDI board and discovered some interesting things. Details are in the now-updated original post, but long story short: VLB EIDE perf is excellent w/ a Promise EIDE 2300 v3 and 2GB Verbatim CF card. You were dead on about the cache chips! After some swapping, …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@CoffeeOne I am not sure about 150MHz on the intel part. It might not be possible. Most struggle at 120MHz, and without a Peltier, 150MHz seems unlikely. Clock-for-clock differences between the intel part and Am5x86 are not that drastic afaik, likely within margin of error. ------ @pshipkov Mach64 …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@CoffeeOne Awesome work! Glad to see the VLI is up and running. Interested to hear what you're able to squeeze out of it--please keep us apprised of your progress. ------- @pshipkov I find this to be interesting. The ET4000AX should by all means be superior, but it makes sense that they'd perform …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

I really appreciate your work with these Turbo XT builds. There aren’t enough numbers out there. Lots of anecdotes, but hard data is hard to find (no pun intended). I really wish there were more 8086 AT boards. I’ve only ever seen one/two but it’d be interesting to throw them in the mix. NEC V20/V30 …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

Been a while, but hope everyone here has been well. @pshipkov Really loving the XT adventures. Interesting to see the disparities between the 8086 and 8088. On paper, it's easy to understand the differences, but in reality, it seems the picture is even less clear without some numbers. And wow, oh …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@CoffeeOne Nice board you've got there! Excited to see some results. Trident 9440 VL is a great card. Very good all-arounder. @pshipkov and @AnonymousCoward have some very helpful discussion on the previous page or two. Is your 9440 a 9440, 9440AGi, or 9440-1, by chance? I am curious, as I still …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@feipoa My pleasure! I am glad to have been able to confirm the oddness on my end. I used the NICE/MCCI SuperEISA that's shown earlier. My board was equipped with an AM5x86-133 running at 160MHz at the time, and the board was set so that all BIOS timings were at their tightest/most optimized. I did …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@pshipkov Thank you for the kind words. Definitely have more planned for the Batman's Revenge in the future! Not sure about DC's licensing; it's possible, but the actual board name is "Premiere PCI." It's mostly referred to as Batman, but not sure why. Same with other Intel codenames--Mainspike, …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@AnonymousCoward and pshipkov Trident really made way too many ICs to take account of. There are about 55 different sub-versions for each too! 9440, 9440AGi, 9440-1, etc. Thing is, I have found that the 9440 is honestly good in all forms as a upper-mid tier card. Not the best, not the worst. Stable, …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@pshipkov EISA is worth watching for sure! You won't be led astray :) Lots of fun, and neat parts/cards to check out too. Sometimes I feel that these slower setups came as generic IBM clone things. At least, that's how I rationalize it. Otherwise, why buy such a board? I constantly wonder that about …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@pshipkov Agreed. "Minimalist" PCBs are interesting for this era. I appreciate seeing fewer tantalums needing replacement :) Interested to hear his results. I may have to look at my ALi Panda. Seems like a nice assembly. There are 1-2 other VLB-only 386 boards I've seen, all using the M1429. I guess …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@pshipkov I haven't tried the Diamond v2.09 BIOS but re-checked and soft reset works with the #9 BIOS. Boca Research's PCBs are nice too, even for their lower-end cards like this GD5426. Almost like STB's, but not quite to that level of design. Number Nine seems to be the pinnacle, for the most part …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@feipoa I will give this a shot and let you know. I have my TL866-II and a W27E257-12 at the ready. Is your BL3 system using the Alaris Cougar, or a drop-in upgrade on some other VLB 386 board like the ALi Panda? I really like your idea re: testing the BocaLAN. I have a 10/100 ISA Intel card, and a …

Re: 3 (+3 more) retro battle stations

@pshipkov Thanks! I hope this info has been helpful. Testing this stuff is pretty fun! Just following the lead of all the great work you guys have been putting in! Compared to the regular S3 805, the S3 805i is infinitely superior. Updated the previous post and added a few more cards; 805i is …
