If you want crystal clear, an MU-500/1000/2000 or SC-D70 via SPDIF is like nothing else. The samples in XG SoftSync are probably more accurate to what any game was written to, but Yamaha was pretty good out having their distinct sound.

After you boot into Windows, open the sound mixer and mute all of the inputs. There should be at least a mic, line-in, CD-in, and on some cards PC Speaker.

Very cool, since you want to compare modules, have you considered hooking up the MIDI Thru/Out of the module to a USB MIDI cable and into a modern PC? You'd be able to play the games the way you have been while also recording a MIDI file you can then easily play back on the other modules.

It all depends on the games you want to play, but my feelings is that a Pentium 200/233MMX or a K6-2/3 is able to handle most of the last speed sensitive games. What motherboard is your Pentium? It likely needs a new coin cell battery or the Dallas clock replacement. Not all Win9X games work well on XP, and later-era DOS games will run much better with a more powerful machine. You could just use DOSBOX, but then why have the 486 either?

As mentioned keyboard/mouse could be tricky. If it ends up being just for storage, could PCMCIA CF or SD reader work? I'm not sure what you'll have to do to get those mounted in DOS though. Most older packaging for them mentions at least Win9x.
