Re: WP32 McCake : MT32 compatible waveblaster board

Love this project! Feature request time! Will there be ways to cycle ROMs for munt (CM32L, old MT32) as well as load different sound fonts from within DOS like you can with MDF and a midi PC emulator? These are already features of MT32 Pi. NM: I keep thinking this is going to run MT32 Pi, which is …

Re: Running online DRM games offline

in Milliways
If the game requires steam to run but steam cannot run on that os anymore then you'll need to use a crack, steam emulator or find an old version of steam. An old version of Steam won't work anymore. I finished an XP build over the holidays and none of the guides work anymore. Valve changed the auth …

Re: Descent DOS Help

If your use case is just gaming, 1GB or more shouldn't give you anything. Games of that era didn't use much memory. Additional memory bandwidth can improve things, but it depends on the games you're running. I've found games that hit a P4 hard can usually be ran on WinXP and that will give you …

Re: CDROM Emulator?!?

I really would like CD emulation myself (and actually think $200 isn't outrageous for this), but you have to realize that the expense is caused simply because emulation of a much higher throughput device requires a much higher power CPU. My understanding of this device is that the bulk of the cost …

Re: Descent DOS Help

How is the RAM configured? I think Pentium 4s can do dual channel, but maybe try dropping it down to 1GB or less on a single stick if necessary. If that works you could always get two 512MB sticks.

Re: Descent DOS Help

in DOS
Does it work when ran through from within Windows? I'm not a fan of the SBLive in pure DOS. But it seems to work well from within Windows. Were DOS drivers that support soundfonts under pure DOS ever found? If not that another huge reason to stick with running from within Windows.

DOS GOG games are just the regular game packaged together with a preconfigured DOSBox. CD based games may have a CD images included that automounts in DOSBox. You'll need to either burn that to a disk or use virtual CD software to mount them.

Install the GOG version on a modern PC. Then delete the subdirectories, dosbox*.conf, GOG*.*, *.pdf, and uninst*.* files. This should leave you with just over 2MB of files you can copy to your 386, and play.

Re: Making a midi device tower

If memory serves me well, as a XG/GM computer module, a MU80 will give you nothing more than a MU50. So that's another option whatever you find available, and it may also be cheaper. For games you are right, the MU50 is a budget version of the MU80. Price-wise they seem to be pretty much exactly …

Re: Making a midi device tower

If you only have room for 1 or 2 or 3 MIDI devices which would you choose to get the authentic sound the game developer intended for you to hear ? If space is an issue, get a Raspberry Pi 3 and run MT32 Pi on it. That will give you MT32 old, MT32 new, and CM32L. The software also supports …

Re: The Athlon 64 Frustration Build

I recommend getting a SB Live or Audigy 1, you'll get better quality EAX which many games of that era support. You can keep the YMF744 for DOS gaming if you want. In my A64 Win98 build I'm actually using a SB Audigy 1 and Diamond MX300. I have the digital out from the MX300 to the Audigy's CD …

Re: WP32 McCake : MT32 compatible waveblaster board

How about an USB interface and audio out on the McCake like it is on the Dreamblaster X2? Like for Routing the Dosbox MIDI to this device. Wouldn't it be better to just run Munt or a Soundfont directly on the host machine if you are running Dosbox on a modern machine? You could also just run MT32 …

Re: adding another to win98 in pcem

Ya, that processor is likely just way too slow. Even the highest-end desktop processors can't run the highest-end PCem profiles at full speed. VMWare passes the instructions through so it can run pretty fast. PCem emulates the hardware so it performs much slower.

Re: Making a midi device tower

One module I'm not seeing get any love in here is the Roland SC-D70. I got one just under a month ago and it's quickly become a favorite. It's the last in the Sound Canvas line and is basically a SC8820 that can run at 24bit 44/48Khz vs 24bit 32Khz on the 8820/8850. It also is the only SC to support …

Re: adding another to win98 in pcem

thanks for that reply, that should help me though at same my enthusiasm for using PCEM has taken a hit in that i just installed FS2000pro and it runs terribly in PCEM Win98 SE, even though selected roms to make a pentium mobile mmx 300mhz, 512mb ram, voodoo 2. i dont know what i have missed in the …
