Re: Upgrading the Oscillator of a Compaq Deskpro 50M (486 DX2/50) processor board ?

Where are you located NightShadowPT? I have some spare 33Mhz boards and I might send you one from germany? I'm living in the UAE, but I have a forwarding address I can use in Germany. To be clear, I currently have a working board running a 486 DX2/66, but it is one of the boards without L2 cache ( …

Re: Upgrading the Oscillator of a Compaq Deskpro 50M (486 DX2/50) processor board ?

Well, it's done... but unfortunately the mod has failed. I changed the oscillator on the board, but ended up with graphical corruption (but I could make out the computer was doing the memory test, and passed it). Unfortunately, this seems to mess up the system somehow, so maybe just changing the …

Re: Upgrading the Oscillator of a Compaq Deskpro 50M (486 DX2/50) processor board ?

Thanks for the tips... I'll let you know how the adventure progresses as soon as I receive the oscillators and try my soldering skills :) By the way, if you look at the board on the first post, you can see there is an empty slot for what looks like a Mathematical Co-Processor, but in this case it …

Re: My DIY sound card replicas

I'd like to get a parallel port sound card to use with a couple of thin clients that I have. I've also read that you can use a TSR (Temu) to get Tandy sound as well with a Covox. Am I correct in assuming that this would also work with this device? Hi, I recently got a CVX-4 (Covox clone) and it …

Re: In search for max sound compatibility :)

Just to update you on this topic, I ended up getting a Cvx-4 to complement my options (and give some use to my parallel port :)). I have to say the sound quality is quite impressive, much better than I expected (for the games that have support for the Covox). But truth is that most, if not all of …

Re: Upgrading the Oscillator of a Compaq Deskpro 50M (486 DX2/50) processor board ?

By the way, in case someone is interested, I ran some tests on both configurations (the 486DX2 66 without cache vs 486DX2 50 with cache) ____________|__ 486DX2 66*_|__486DX2 50** -----------------|---------------|---------- 3D bench_______|____37.0____|____34.4____(DX2/66 is 7.6% faster) Chris 3D …

Re: Upgrading the Oscillator of a Compaq Deskpro 50M (486 DX2/50) processor board ?

The board indeed supports either type of crystal oscillator since there is continuity between those holes and pads. You'll have to make a decision of whether you want to use a SMD one or Through-Hole one. In all honesty, I have no ideia what is the difference (or even if there is any). What are the …
