Re: Would you be interested in an x86-based alternative to the Raspberry Pi, optimized for retro gaming?

I would absolutely adore the product you describe, but I do not believe AMD would ever do it. There's just not enough market for it. For all the use cases but retro gaming, there are (arguably better) solutions already. For instance, I could see benefiting from something like this would be old …

Re: DOSBox vs PCem vs 86Box which do you prefer?

DOSbox all the way for DOS programs, and virtual machines for Windows programs (no preference between Virtualbox and VMware; they both have their unique drawbacks). I tried the full-blown "simulate the movement of every single electron in every clock cycle of the guest machine even when there's no …

Re: Would you be interested in an x86-based alternative to the Raspberry Pi, optimized for retro gaming?

Really... when all the old hardware starts to die for good, then emulation / virtualization is what will be left. As far as having to have old video cards, it should be possible to emulate some of the old stuff that has been gotten rid of such as table fog and palletized textures without too much …

Re: Blood II: The Chosen

Okay, I poked around a bit and there IS a solution: - Add the line "maxfps=60" to the Autoexec.cfg and defaults.cfg files, and set them to read-only; - Disable Directx 6 commands; - Enable optimized Surfaces, poly gap fixing, and triple buffering; - When you first run the game, press ~ to bring up …

Re: Windows 7 Retro?

Facebook didn't open to the general public until 2006 and most people (including me) stayed on Myspace for a few years after that Let me guess, it was because Facebook's new UI was a disaster and it didn't display animated GIFs properly? ;) Yes. The site was difficult to understand and navigate (in …

Re: Windows 7 Retro?

some people's brains stopped developing some time during the XP era. I'm pretty sure most of those people were Microsoft employees. Facebook came into existence in 2004. Totally unrelated XD Facebook didn't open to the general public until 2006 and most people (including me) stayed on Myspace for a …

Re: Would you be interested in an x86-based alternative to the Raspberry Pi, optimized for retro gaming?

EAX or A3D ??? Win98 PCs are easy to make, and probably cheaper than this hypothetical device. A vintage Radeon 9800XT alone goes for minimum $150 on eBay. Socket 939 motherboard? Another $50. CPU, RAM... suddenly you're waaaaay out of the price range that this hypothetical device would occupy. If …

Re: Boxedwine (Wine on multiple platforms)

Based on the website's description, it sounds as though the windows version would emulate Linux on Windows, and then run the Linux version of WINE on the emulated Linux system...? That seems to be one compatibility/emulation layer more than is actually necessary. Why not just port WINE to Windows?

Re: Would you be interested in an x86-based alternative to the Raspberry Pi, optimized for retro gaming?

I get the feeling your knowledge of DOS games is very limited. The games I mentioned will not run on an XT. Jazz is requires at least a fast 386, and recommends a pentium 90. Supaplex is designed for a fast 386. Lots of early 90's games are speed sensitive to some extent, even if it's not …

Re: Windows 7 Retro?

Windows 10 will run on a 1GB/1Ghz system better than the most up to date that you can get XP, it needed over 512MB by the time SP2 was out and it only got worse. Even with a full RAM build out to 3.5GB it's a thrashy POS. At 2GB even Vista seems better than XP, but both 7 and 10 are better on 2GB …

Re: Windows 7 Retro?

I just want to point out that practically every software vendor other than Microsoft still supports Win7. All major browsers work on Win7. Minecraft, World of Warcraft, and Steam all work on Win7. Cyberpunk 2077? Call of Duty: Cold War? The System Shock remake? Win7. Avid Media Composer? Win7. Even …

Re: Would you be interested in an x86-based alternative to the Raspberry Pi, optimized for retro gaming?

What you're proposing requires re-designing old hardware, adding a CPU and GPU on the same die, and fitting it to a new process. It is EXPENSIVE. Why? The architecture has already been designed. Isn't that where the vast majority of the R&D costs go? You can't just take a clawhammer core and a R350 …
