Hmmm, in DOS, drives automatically use a PIO mode. (unless it is quite a modern board with build in UDMA bios) You don't really need to configure that. The reason why the DOS drivers can't find it is because it is probably looking for a IDE controller at the standard IDE ports and Interrupts and …

Did you try configuring the XTIDE BIOS to boot in 80x25 Monochrome mode? Hey that worked a treat! RTFM I guess is the lesson here. I did notice that the system refuses to post if the option rom is installed and the cmos battery is dead — you have to pull the card and run the compaq setup program …

I don't see it listed in the HP service handbook for that model -- they just list Part# 1420-0513 which appears to be a HP 4.5V battery pack with a two wire lead that plugs into the external battery connector. Yeah this is the original soldered in battery. I prefer to remove them and replace them …

Sorry I meant that the date of revision of the microcode 0686 is newer 5/2000 than the one for 068A 2/2000. I’ve ordered the C step processor just to see. It was only $15 shipped. Way cheaper than the 286 -> cx486slc board I just bought for waaaaay too much money. I hope it will fit in my compaq …
