Based on that screen shot it looks like you've also got an ESS sound card in your system. From what I can tell, that looks like it's just the initialization software for the ESS card, not the Sound Blaster. I would start with removing the ESS card from your system and disabling the initialization …

The only suggestion I can offer is to look carefully at the components on the motherboard near the PS/2 connector. See if anything looks like it’s burnt out or anything. As I understand it, it can be bad to plug and unplug PS/2 devices while the computer is on, and that can cause damage.

Okay, thanks for the info. I used a meter on the pads of the missing capacitor, and yes, one of them goes to ground. So, if neither of these components are strictly necessary, I guess it's back to the drawing board to figure out my issues. Thanks guys.

I’d say you should go with plan C. Spend less now so you can start experimenting. You might find you change your mind on what you want after you get your hands on something. I know I have done that myself. Plus, an upgrade to a GF2 MX would be cheap and easy later on.
