Depending on the BIOS that comes with the Pocket386, the maximum drive size is likely limited to 8.4gb. If you are lucky, 128gb may be possible. Operating system support is also going to be a limit on how large of a drive you can use.

USB support in most old BIOSes was fairly poor. It is likely that both the BIOS and your DOS drivers can't properly handle HID devices behind another device, or hot plugging.
