Re: What are my options?

in Windows
Actually, I was just reading about how some DX7 and DX8 stuff is completely broken in Vista. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/gametechnologiesgeneral/thread/3f97b9bc-9055-4a1b-b2b5-f5f255c2c679/ Another consideration is that nVidia's newer cards (or rather the newer drivers that support …

Re: Quest for Glory 4 1/2

in DOS
I think I see the problem. You downloaded cwsdpmi like the game told you to, right? The first Google hit for cwsdpmi (after Wikipedia) is for http://www.dbit.com/pub/cwsdpmi/ . That is version 4. I get the crash in DOSBox with that version too. Version 5 works, and so does version 7. The link to the …

Re: Quest for Glory 4 1/2

in DOS
It's been a while since I poked at it, but as I recall you can download the Windows version of AGS 2.23, point it at the DOS executable for QFG 4.5, and be on your way. I also recall that the game is apparently a little bit broken even when you can get it running correctly.

Re: SQ1-3 on Good Old Games

Eh, I purchased the Space Quest collection for dirt cheap on Steam quite some time ago. (And still haven't gotten around to playing it, of course.) But did you know ScummVM is finally getting SCI support going? Proper SCI support anywhere seemed like one of those things that would never happen.

Re: News article about remakes for old games

in Milliways
Lemmings most recently appeared on the PSP - and I guess if it didn't get ported elsewhere, it wasn't much of a seller. The only thing that comes to mind is Neverhood - properly re-released with high-res graphics. It does not deserve to languish in obscurity.

Re: Hybrid CD Mac/DOS Game?

in Milliways
Full Tilt Pinball (from Maxis) is the first one that comes to mind. I definitely had it going under Basilisk II, as well. I've also got a boxed copy of Starfighter 3000 that apparently contains Mac and PC versions, but it's definitely PPC-only, so Basilisk II won't help you there. EDIT: Wait, Full …

Re: Is it possible to extract fonts from old DOS games?

in Milliways
This grows tiresome. I shall have a look myself. FONT.ADT is just a text file. It is functionally equivalent to ASCII art. Furthermore, even XnView, which explicitly states it is capable of opening Lumena CEL files - whatever those are - is not capable of deriving useful information from TOSFONT.OBT …

Re: Is it possible to extract fonts from old DOS games?

in Milliways
I've tried TrID and, at first, it kept telling me that all four files were unknown. If the online TrID worked but not the offline, then you were using it wrong. Perhaps you forgot to download the definitions file? Anyway, Autodesk Animator FLIC animations were extremely common back in the day, and …

Re: Is it possible to extract fonts from old DOS games?

in Milliways
No, no, no, there is very little probability that this file is actually a WMF file. IrfanView is mistaken. In fact, that gives me a much better idea: you should try TrID . This is a program that looks really, really hard at the contents of a file and will give you a percentage probability of what …

Re: ESS PCI Sound Cards?

in PC Emulation
ISA is not an option as the computer I have in mind has not ISA slots. The FCC ID is LWHA311H30. The most prominent chip is labelled "ESS Maestro-2", which I guess might make it the same as Re: ESS (not Ensoniq) Maestro-2 Compatibility .
