Re: best way to use legacy apps?

in DOS
Dos 7.x from Win98 is very bad. After long searching I found a dos driver for soundblaster (the virtual sound card). But this one doesn`t install because dos is newer then 6.22. One solitary experience is very poor justification for declaring anything to be "very bad". The old Sound Blaster DOS …

Re: Internet in Windows 3.11

in PC Emulation
Is there a Firefox that will run under Windows 3.11 (or at least with Win32s installed) ? I'm pretty sure there's an old version of Opera out there that might also work, but it will probably have the shareware limitation attached.

Re: Final Fantasy 8 and ugly black boxes

in Windows
I played through this just a little while ago, though I was using my AGP ATI 9600XT and Windows 98SE. Anyway, there's a modification or two for this game that purports to enhance the music. Perhaps one of them might help?

Re: Downloading old games and copyright

in DOS
"Emulators of old games using eg Flash Player" ? There is no such thing, if I am not mistaken. There are remakes of old games written in Flash, but those are not emulators.

Re: Looking to get into it

http://www.mini-itx.com/ has a bunch of projects in which people have replaced the guts of some old computer with a modern PC while leaving the functionality of the keyboard intact. Looks like no one has done that with an Apple II just yet, though. I don't recall that any of the MECC games used " …

Re: GK2 CD Unreadable?

in Windows
Actually, HFVExplorer would be the way to go. It offers more flexibility than ISOBuster does in some situations, as I recall. (At least, it's been recommended for extracting the data from Macintosh versions of Lucasarts games for usage with ScummVM.) Of course, if you actually intend to do something …

Re: Looking to get into it

so I figure there's something to it I try to keep an open mind, but I find that I cannot fathom any way in which the typical computer user could find an Apple II to resemble a Macintosh. (The only exception would be the IIgs and GS/OS, but I've never encountered anyone who used that back in the day …

Re: Looking to get into it

The Apple II was a very different machine from the Macintosh. Perhaps you are thinking of the old MECC software? I unfortunately can't find a good reference for them on hand, but they're very well-known. It really was quite marvelous, the range of topics their software covered. I'm sure some have …

Re: Problem with ps2 mice on 486/100 pc...

in PC Emulation
Next step is to decrypt the 10-pin ps2 mobo connector. I found the power/ground lines and the ps2 mice get power. Next I found the 2 other tracks, data and clock... but in vain... connecting the mouse there kill the keyboard or makes it produce irrelevant characters... I tried wiring one of those …

Re: fat16 vs fat32

in PC Emulation
There are DOS drivers that allow FAT32 access. I seem to recall that the DRFAT32 driver from DR-DOS works well enough with MS-DOS 6.22. And I for one am still not convinced that there's much of a reason to chose Win95b over Win98 (or at least Win98 with 98lite installed).

Re: DOS CD Drivers

in DOS
Actually, there are a couple of alternatives to the Oak Technologies driver that take up less RAM. http://www.mdgx.com/newtip1.htm#CDROM4 Some of them can be used with DRVLOAD or CTLOAD (or a similar utility) that allows them to be loaded from autoexec.bat instead of config.sys. http://www.mdgx.com/ …

Re: sound blaster emulation in dos

The question is absurd. If your sound hardware has DOS drivers, it will probably already be useable as a Sound Blaster card by DOS applications. If your sound hardware does not have DOS drivers, separate "Sound Blaster emulation" would be useless.

Re: end of my rope...

in PC Emulation
Are you sure the connector is still good? Sometimes you can test those by sticking pins or wires into the appropriate holes and using an ohmmeter to check if they're actually connected to the other end. Otherwise, and I guess this is a long shot, but if it's not the motherboard and if it's not the …
