Re: Recommendations for (semi)-pro modern sound cards

in Milliways
I know this forum isn't dedicated to such things, but I've noticed that we have quite a few sound hardware buffs on VOGONS and even some musicians... and it can't hurt to ask. No, you're not wrong in posting here or asking here. There are a number of talented sound card/module aficionados and …

hey sklawz, With the E-MU 0404 it was possible and PatchMix DSP had the foobar output on ASIO 1/2 and media player output on WAVE 1/2 with both sounds mixed as expected. Therefore an E-MU may be a good choice for PCI. Thanks for checking, that's some helpful info. My USB E-MU 0202 doesn't have …

Davros: my onboard sound device never had an ASIO driver of its own, but I used ASIO4ALL and it worked just as well. and yes, I contacted E-MU support about it a while ago. - Either PCI or USB (actually prefer PCI if the drivers are better... portability is not a concern) You're limiting yourself a …

Re: Gaming Category - Indie. Meaning?

in Milliways
Wasn't aware that "indie" had any attached meaning beyond just "independent". But I guess it's inevitable that people would jump at the chance to give it a latte-sipping, beret-wearing, hipster douchebag aura (just like it has outside of gaming) Independent games have always been there on the PC. …

Recommendations for (semi)-pro modern sound cards

I know this forum isn't dedicated to such things, but I've noticed that we have quite a few sound hardware buffs on VOGONS and even some musicians... and it can't hurt to ask. I'm looking for a good modern sound device, suitable for use in a DAW. As for now I use a USB-based E-MU 0202, but I have a …

Re: Spam, spam, spam

To Vogons admins: you can end this spambot nonsense (~95% of spam posts/accounts are spambots; real people are only 5%) by changing image captcha (which is ocr'ed already) with Q&A captcha (like: 'What's the color of grass' and the expected answer is 'green'). No need to create more strict …

Re: Retro computers and wikipedia

I don't know if I'd call Microsoft's legacy support particularly strong. Their product will install on old hardware, and run old software, but will most often do it so poorly that you almost wish it didn't.... they have these weird limitations on legacy support that feel rather arbitrary (from XP's …

Re: Retro computers and wikipedia

for me the definition of "PC" isn't just an abbreviation of "personal computer" - it implies descent from the IBM PC architecture. "runs Windows" isn't satisfactory, neither is "DOS", because a host of other OSes has been available for this architecture over the years, and then you have those old …

Re: When is a computer considered vintage and/or retro

in Milliways
Yeah.. "retro" (in the "style" sense) has to somehow symbolize the era, so iconic branding works - something relatively faceless like a 386 won't do it. But that's just how the term is used in fashion, music, etc. everywhere: a set of symbols / styles that are instantly recognizable, and acquire …

Re: CD /D option

what do you mean by "modern versions of DOS"? I'm pretty sure the /D switch did not exist in MS-DOS 6.22, which was the last full-fledged MS-DOS; of course, if I'm wrong then I stand corrected. the Command Prompt in Windows XP does have /D, but that's not DOS. anyway, you're saying the CWD utility …
