I want to play Super Wing Commander. It runs too fast on SheepShaver. Is there a better emulator for speed control or is there a speed reduction app that doesn't cause insta-crashes with SheepShaver?

SheepShaver is a PowerPC Emulator.
Super Wing Commander was designed for Motorola 68040.
Basilisk II is a Motorola 68040 emulator.
You made a wrong emulator choice for this game.

It has 68k and PPC executables.

Besides I wasn't asking about HOW to run it. It plays TOO FAST. That is the issue here.

it won't be too fast in basilisk for sure.

OK I will try Basilisk and see what happens.

Actually it will likely be even faster in Basilisk. The emulation overhead of a PPC vs a 68k is a lot higher, so emulating a PPC Mac is not as fast.

Those emulators unfortunately don't have any sort of speed control. You might want to look into MESS's Mac emulation, which is still in its infancy but actually sticks to the proper CPU speed. It might work, it might not.

The Mac Quadra 700 MESS driver has "preliminary" status. I can't get it to boot with any of the System 7 HD images I have.

If Wing Commander runs in any 68k CPU, try choosing the 68020 or the 68030 for emulation in Basilisk II. This will certainly slow the game down if still too fast with the 68040.

CPU arch does not determine CPU speed

Yes, but a 68020 or a 68030 are slower than a 68040 for sure.

You can try mini vmac as well, which has speed selection.

Well in the meantime (since 2011) I was gifted a PowerMac 7500 so it's not a problem anymore. 😀
