First let me say the VDMSound is marvelous software and has allowed me to experience all my old favorite DOS games the way they were meant to be experienced.

My question is this: what ways exist to recreate that distinct sound of early 1990s MIDI? You know exactly how it sounds: hideously synthetic instruments, absolutely no wavetable samples, thin drums that sound like cardboard and tin foil.

I used to have a Packard Bell 486DX66 with a whopping 2 GB of HDD space (that was a lot back then) and I believe it had an MPU-401 internal sound card. It produced the aforementioned "music," and I've been waxing nostalgiac for it as of recent.

I have a ton of old PCs sitting around, so if I loaded Win2K on 'em, would I be able to play MIDI files on that machine (assuming it had MPU-401 sound card) and hear that glorious tinny ethereal noise once again?
