Hello!

I'm trying to get X-Com running on my WinXP Pro system, and have run into a snag during VDMSound installation and initialization.

I've tried about 7 different downloads from differing sites of 2.0.4, so I don't believe this is a corrupted download issue.

My system is a:

WinXP Pro
P4 1.8
512ram
GF4 Ti4200 vid card (latest drivers)
SB Live! Value sound card (latest drivers)

During VDMSound installation, I get the following 12 error pop-up boxes:

Error 1904. Module C:\Programfiles\VDMSound\DiskWriter.dll failed to register.
HRESULT -2147221164.
Contact your support personnel.

This same error occuurs for the following files:
DiskWriter.dll
DMAController.dll
EmuJoystick.dll
EmuMPU401.dll
EmuSBCompat.dll
MIDIDevice.dll
MIDIIndicator.dll
MIDIToolkit.dll
VDDLoader.dll
EMUAdLib.dll
WaveDevice.dll
DSoundDevice.dll

After clicking 'ok' through all of this, I then unzipped update1 into the same directory, overwriting the old files.

Upon trying to launch X-Com's .bat files for play or sound settings, I get the following 11 errors prior to launch:

Instantiation - COM Error
Unable to instantiate emulation module 'VDMServicesProvider'.
0x800401f3 -Invalid class string (C:\PROGRAM~1\VDMSound\VDMS.INI:66)
Do you wish to continue?

This same error occues for the following files:
VDMS.INI:243
VDMS.INI:86
VDMS.INI:161
VDMS.INI:66
VDMS.INI:131
VDMS.INI:116
VDMS.INI:102
VDMS.INI:146
VDMS.INI:217
VDMS.INI:186
VDMS.INI:202

X-Com then launches, and I get some very unpleasant rumbles where the opening music should take place, but I do get sound effects, although they sound very 'watery', 'muted', and 'slowed'.

I do experience lock-ups in the game during mission transitions, some character movement, and some geoscape navigation, which I assume are sound-related.

Any advice on how to correct my VDMSound program is welcomed!

Thanks in advance,

Zhenya

It seems you're having problems installing VDMSound. Sometimes, installation can be a bit tricky. I think, this is the correct procedure...

+ Double click on VDMSOUND-2.0.4-WINNT-I386.MSI to run the installation.
+ Reboot (just to be on the safe side)
+ Unpack VDMSOUND.2.0.4.UPDATE2.ZIP (the 2nd update) to the same folder you installed VDMSound in (usually \Program files\VDMSound) OVERWRITING everything.
+ Unpack VDMSLAUNCHPAD.V1.0.1.1.ZIP (The Launchpad) to the same folder where VDMSound resides.
+ Run the INSTALL.BAT file to register filetypes.
+ Reboot.
