You don't offer many details here and this may sound like an stupid question but, have you tried running it with VDMSound yet? I guess you have. Have you configured sound properly. Most DOS applications/games had a separate executable file for configuring sound and/or options. Check for a SETUP.EXE, SOUND.EXE, CONFIG.EXE or something like that. It may be a .COM or .BAT file instead, though.

P.S: I played DW1 long time ago but I recall it was a protected mode game. However I don't remember how was sound configured.

1) More info, please. We can guess that you may be using VDMSound...but we have no idea of which version, whether or not you installed any updates or whether or not you are using the GUI launchpad. Some system specifications wouldn't hurt, either...
