I have a win98 system. The soundcard (AFAIK) is not SB16 compatible, and I cannot play older games. VDMSound does not support win98. Do I have any recourse other than ripping out the sound card and putting the old ISA SB card in???

If you have an ISA slot and an ISA card that's actually your best option as that's what the "classics" are looking for.
