Anyone got Panzer General to work?

I have the sound working perfectly, but despite using Vlad's mouse hack 0.1 the lousy pointer is locked in top left screen.

Also: is there a Windows 95 version of this game? In style of Allied General? If so; could someone post a link to a download.

This guy got it to work.

Funny, he didn't mention the mouse problem. Do you have the latest patch and all?

As for the windows port, a definite maybe:

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22Panzer+G … ring=d&filter=0

If so, it's quite rare. Keep in mind, though, that many companies would merely repackage their old dos versions and say "it's now for Windows 95!!!"

Yeah. I wish Vlad could do some more looking into MOUSESET issues at some point. It's probably on his to-do list. Anyhow, we're getting reports of which games don't work with it, so it's good for testing.

Well, here's a bizarre thing. Finally found a "Panzer General" demo, and it seems to run fine so long as there is NO AUDIO at all (mouse is also fine, just set to move too slow).

Even if I enable the PC speaker, I get this:
-------------------------------------------------------------
DOS/4GW Professional Protected Mode Run-time Version 1.95
Copyright (c) Rational Systems, Inc. 1990-1993
InitHeap
mem allocated = 1500000
Mel Fatal Error #: 5 Trap #: 18
Mel Protected Mode Version 2.2.5, 4/28/94
Error Message: GTL File Not Found.
Re-installation may correct this.
-------------------------------------------
Makes no sense. BTW, that DOS4GW is built-in, not a separate file.

No solution, same problem. And note the posting year - 1994! This isn't a problem caused by Windows NT. Did you try reinstallation of the demo, as it suggests? 😀

It is, however, an error message you can see with other SSI games:

You also see "Mel Fatal Error" messages with other games, too. http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie= … ter=0&sorting=d

I recommend all participants in this thread go to this forum, there are guys who can help, and it's updated regularly:

BTW, Vlad - this guy mentions an interesting mouse fix that you may want to have a look at, it works in XP (supposedly):

(Used Google Cache to link - half the time http://www.minnemacs.com/manyhighways/sandbox/xp.html works, the other half it doesn't - good info there.)

That's probably the best idea. I'm kind of tied-up with a few things right now, though. Plus, I can't find the original CD.

But why should I run that? I have all sounds (music, samples, everything) working perfect with the full game except that STINKING mouse pointer. Set mouse to "slow"? That don't apply to Win2K from what I know(!?).Tip: Don't forget to give the game DPMI-memory, run VDMSound with the sound setup and don't select Soundblaster16 as the soundcard, but one of the Waveblaster-something (sorry haven't got the game installed on this machine, so I couldn't check:)).

No reason. Nor did I suggest you do that. I can't find my Panzer General CD, so I sought out the demo from my collection of SSI CD's.

Set mouse to "slow"? That don't apply to Win2K from what I know(!?)

The mouse pointer moved substantially slower than normal operation in the demo.

The reason I pointed out these things is because, even though this is the same basic "engine" as the full CD version of Panzer General, there were a substantial number of different responses between these programs. Lack of consistency means that this may be a rather complex game to troubleshoot.

I also found my "Fantasy General", which uses the same engine and got a different set of responses. I'm tossing my responses here in the hope that someone will see something recognizable and "put the pieces of the puzzle together".

Did you try asking in that forum yet?

A Windows 3.1/Win95 CD version of Panzer General does exist. I have been helping my brother-in-law with updating his new Dell 4550 Win XP Pro(SP1) with all of his old games, and his CD-ROM copy of "Panzer General" works just fine. Right off the CD-ROM it is version 1.2, and no patches exist for it.

Just use the Win XP "Win95" compatiability, and it just works. Probably a lot easier that trying to get the DOS version to work under WinXP...
